The questioner : Peace be upon you, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh: And upon you peace.

The questioner : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Before I got married, I said...

The Shaykh : What are you saying to yourself?

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Raise your voice.

The questioner : Before I got married, I was engaged to the one who recites al-Fatihah, and a problem arose... so I said, by Allah, I will not marry this girl.

The Shaykh : Are you afraid to speak?

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : Are you afraid to speak?

The questioner : I am not afraid or anything...

The Shaykh : Yes, be patient, ask again so we do not have to repeat it.

The questioner : And on the night...

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner : Before I got married, I was engaged to the one who recites al-Fatihah, and one day my family was discussing the mahr and matters of the marriage. When I found them disparaging my fiancée, and I was not in the room, I heard my sister speaking and disparaging my fiancée. I was upset by this speech and swore an oath that I would not marry unless I changed this house. I said, by Allah, I am not married while she is present in this house. Also, there is another matter I am not exactly sure about regarding what I said. Perhaps I said: "Marriage is forbidden to me in this house, just as you are forbidden to me; marriage is forbidden to me while you are present in this house, just as you are forbidden to me." Or perhaps I said, "Marriage is forbidden to me while you are present in the house." What is your opinion, O Shaykh?

The Shaykh : I have no opinion; write your question on a piece of paper.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Do not say "or" or "or"; what am I supposed to answer, the first one or the second one?! Write your question on a piece of paper and let me hear the question so I can answer you. This is first, and second, when you say "engaged": do you mean that you contracted the marriage or not?

The questioner : No, the one who recites al-Fatihah.

The Shaykh : What do I care about the one who recites al-Fatihah? I am telling you, did you contract the marriage or not?

The questioner : Do you mean you wrote the contract?

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner: No.

The Shaykh : Okay, write your question on a piece of paper.
