What is the ruling on reciting the Qur'an at a condolence gathering? And what is the ruling on preparing food on this occasion?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings.

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace, and Allah's mercy and blessings.

The questioner : Peace be upon you... How is our professor doing? I am speaking now from my brother-in-law's house regarding the fact that we are sitting here now because, as you know, his mother passed away, may Allah have mercy on her. There are some questions I will ask you now, yes, please give me one minute, ah, our professor, can you hear me?

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : Professor, regarding this situation, where there is naturally a death, some people place the Qur'an to be read, naturally, on the recorder. What is your opinion on that?

The Shaykh : Reciting the Qur'an on this occasion, whether by a living reader or by a recorder, neither is prescribed in the religion of Islam. And the one who is struck by a death should first receive that with satisfaction and acceptance, and with beautiful patience, as the Exalted said:
(155) And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, (156) Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return." (157) Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.
[Al-Baqarah 2:155-157]
. And among that is that he says:
We belong to Allah, and to Him we do return.
Sunan Abi Dawud 3119Sahih (Al-Albani)
, and whenever he recalls the magnitude of the calamity, he repeats this beautiful phrase:
We belong to Allah, and to Him we do return.
Sunan Abi Dawud 3119Sahih (Al-Albani)
, and they should increase their supplication for the deceased. And if there is no way other than this, but the son and daughter of the deceased are permitted to recite whatever they wish from the Qur'an for the soul of the deceased, whether it was a father or a mother. As for the others, they do not recite the Qur'an for the soul of this deceased, but rather they have the supplication:
Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed
[Al-Hashr 59:10]
. This is how the position of the one struck by such a calamity should be, and we ask Allah for the deceased to have mercy.

The questioner : O Allah, amen.

The Shaykh : And we ask Allah for the bereaved to have patience.

The questioner : My professor.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : Regarding the food.

The Shaykh : If the food is brought by the relatives of the deceased to the bereaved for the deceased, as for the bereaved, it is not permissible for them in the law of Allah to prepare food, and what has befallen them of a calamity is sufficient for them. By his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) to some of the neighbors and relatives of Ja'far:
Prepare food for the family of Ja'far, for they have been occupied by what they are in
. So in this state, in their calamity, it is not permissible for them to occupy themselves with hospitality and receiving the condolers; because this is not a wedding, rather this is a death. So it is not permissible for them to prepare food for the bereaved, except that the neighbors prepare food for the bereaved, this only.

The questioner: Our teacher.

The Shaykh: Yes.
