Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : It is said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Beware of entering upon women.” So a man from the Ansar said: ‘”O Messenger of Allah! What do you think about Hamu? So he said: “The Hamu is death.” إياكم والدخول على النساء ، قالوا: يا رسول الله، أفرأيت الحمو؟. قال: الحمو الموتَ
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1171Sahih (Darussalam)
; The question: Does the husband's father fall under this hadith?

The Shaykh : He does not fall under it.

The questioner : And what are the limits of seclusion with *mahram* relatives, one with the other?

The Shaykh : *Mahram* relatives do not fall under this hadith. The *hamu* referred to here are the husband's relatives who are not *mahram* to the woman. As for *mahram* relatives, the rulings of the Shari'ah are clear that it is permissible for a woman to appear before a *mahram* in a manner that is not permissible for her to appear before a non-*mahram*, as in the well-known verse:
not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ آَبَائِهِنَّ ...
[An-Nur 24:31]
and so on. This is the general rule, but every rule has exceptions, because we hear in this age of incidents that make one's forehead sweat. So the rule is as stated, but if it is known that a certain *mahram* has a deviation in character, then caution must be taken and he should not be treated according to the general rule. For example, another *mahram* known for his piety and righteousness should be present when this *mahram* is there, or a barrier should be placed between him and being alone with the *mahram*. This is, of course, a rare case, but it has its value. Yes.
