The husband's maternal uncle and paternal uncle are not among the mahram relatives

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q1: A woman asks: Is my husband's maternal uncle or paternal uncle considered a mahram to me? If he is a mahram, is it permissible for me to sit with him alone, what are the limits of adornment I may display before him, and is it permissible to shake his hand?
A1: Your husband's maternal uncle or paternal uncle are not mahram relatives; because a mahram is one for whom a woman is permanently forbidden by lineage or by a permissible cause such as breastfeeding,
and in-laws. The mahram relatives on the husband's side are: his fathers, however far up the line, and his sons, however far down the line, only, as Allah the Exalted said:
and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sonsوَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَى جُيُوبِهِنَّ وَلا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلا لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَائِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَاءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَائِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَاءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ
[An-Nur 24:31]
the verse. As for the other relatives of the husband, they are not mahram to the woman, and it is not permissible for her to be alone with them, whether it is the husband's brother, his uncle, his maternal uncle, or anyone else; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“Beware of entering upon women.” So a man from the Ansar said: ‘”O Messenger of Allah! What do you think about Hamu? So he said: “The Hamu is death.”إياكم والدخول على النساء فقال رجل من الأنصار: يا رسول الله: أفرأيت الحمو؟ فقال: الحمو الموت
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1171Sahih (Darussalam)
, and by "in-laws" (al-ham) is meant the relatives of the husband other than the husband's fathers and sons. Just as it is not permissible to be alone with him, it is not permissible to display adornment to him except what usually appears, like a non-mahram entirely, and what usually appears of the woman, such as her jilbab and the like, while being careful to maintain modesty and hijab. As for shaking hands, it is also forbidden; because he is a non-mahram to you. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported about the pledge of allegiance of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to the women, and that he used to say to the woman:Aisha(may Allah be pleased with her) about the pledge of allegiance of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to the women, and that he used to say to the woman:
I have accepted your pledge of allegiance.' He would only say that, but, by Allah he never touched the hand of any women (i.e. never shook hands with them) while taking the pledge of allegiance and he never took their pledge of allegiance except by his words (only).قد بايعتك كلامًا يكلمها به، والله ما مست يده يد امرأة قط في المبايعة وما بايعهن إلا بقوله
Sahih al-Bukhari 2713
. It was narrated by the two Shaykhs, and in the Sunan ofal-Nasa'iThe saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
But I do not shake hands with women.إني لا أصافح النساء
Sunan Ibn Majah 2874Sahih (Darussalam)
And this indicates
the impermissibility of shaking hands with a non-mahram woman, due to the fear of being tempted by her, and because the entire body of a woman is 'awrah.
