What is the ruling on performing tawaf on behalf of a living father, and likewise on behalf of a deceased father?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The questioner asks: What is the ruling on performing tawaf on behalf of a living father and a deceased father?

The Shaykh : I say, O my brothers, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who is the most sincere of all creation toward creation, did not guide the community to worship on behalf of their living or their dead. Rather, he guided the community to make du'a for their dead and their living. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When a man dies, his acts come to an end, but three, recurring charity, or knowledge (by which people) benefit, or a pious child, who prays for him (for the deceased). إذا مات الإنسان انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاثة إلا من صدقة جارية أو علم ينتفع به أو ولد صالح يدعو له
Sahih Muslim 1631
He did not say, "or a righteous son who performs deeds for him, reads for him, prays for him, or fasts for him." Rather, he said, "or a righteous son who makes du'a for him." Even though when a person dies, his deeds are cut off. If deeds were something that a person is required to perform for the dead or the living, he would have said, "or a righteous son who performs deeds for him," so that the exception would be of the same kind as the thing from which it is excepted. Therefore, making du'a for the living or the dead is better than assigning any of your acts of worship to them. Keep your acts of worship for yourself. And success is from Allah.
