The Ruling on Praying for One’s Parents

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q:The questioner, Umm Muhammad from Riyadh, says: Is there a prayer for deceased parents? What is its method? Please inform us. May Allah reward you with good.

A: There is no prayer for children to perform for their parents after death, nor for anyone else. Rather, it is prescribed to make du'a' for them, seek forgiveness for them, give charity on their behalf, and likewise perform Hajj and 'Umrah on their behalf.
As for prayer, it is not prescribed for anyone to pray on behalf of another person or for another person. Rather, one prays over the deceased Muslim before burial. If someone did not pray over him before burial, it is prescribed for him to pray over him after burial if the time elapsed does not exceed approximately three months; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed over the grave of the mother of Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah, and one month had passed since her death.
Likewise, the sunnah of tawaf—which is two rak'ahs after tawaf—is prescribed for the one who performs tawaf. This includes the pilgrim or the one performing 'Umrah on behalf of another; it is prescribed for him, when he performs tawaf on behalf of the one for whom he is acting, to pray two rak'ahs following the tawaf.
The basis for all of this is that acts of worship are based on divine legislation; nothing is prescribed from them except what is established in the Book or the Sunnah. And Allah is the One who grants success.
