The questioner : The questioner says, Your Eminence, the Shaykh, you mentioned debt and people’s laxity regarding it. I ask you to comment on two matters. First: A number of young men purchase cars at the highest prices on credit, and he has not performed Hajj, and he takes them in installments, and he is able to sell them and pay off these installments and perform Hajj, but he makes that an excuse and a barrier from Hajj, and he does not know that perhaps it will become his grave. What is the ruling on his action?

The Shaykh : I see that it is obligatory for a sane person, if he has money that enables him to buy a car that meets his need and perform Hajj with the rest, that he should do so. It is not permissible for him to buy something at a high price, and it is not permissible for him to buy something at a high price and leave off Hajj, because he is wealthy and able to perform Hajj. So the car that he buys for fifty thousand, for example, is sufficient for him with a car for twenty thousand, and he performs Hajj with thirty thousand. How? He performs Hajj from thirty thousand, and perhaps the remainder is sufficient for him to get married. So he obtains a car to ride in to meet his need, and Hajj, and a wife. This is a blessing. Yes.
