My mother vowed to slaughter a camel after we moved into a house that would be our property, and praise be to Allah, we have moved into the house that is our property.

The questioner : He says: Your Eminence, the Shaykh, my mother vowed to slaughter a camel after we moved into a house that would be our property, and praise be to Allah, we have moved into the house that is her property. So what is the camel? Is it the large camel, or al-hashi, or can it be of any type of camel? And if we slaughter this camel, what do we do with it? Is it distributed, or do we eat it, or keep it in the house, or make it a dinner? I ask for detail, may Allah guide you?

The Shaykh : Before I answer regarding the fulfillment of this vow, I say: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade vows and said:
It does not (necessarily) bring good (in the form of substantial, and tangible results), but it is the meant whereby something is extracted from the miserly persons.
Sahih Muslim 1639c
and he said:
It does not avert a decree.
And many are those who make vows and do not fulfill them. Not fulfilling a vow, if it is a vow of obedience, has severe consequences. Listen, Allah the Exalted said:
(75) And among them are those who made a covenant with Allah, [saying], "If He should give us from His bounty, we will surely spend in charity, and we will surely be among the righteous." (76) But when he gave them from His bounty, they were stingy with
[At-Tawbah 9:75-76]
meaning: and they did not give in charity
and turned away while they refused.
[At-Tawbah 9:76]
and they were not among the righteous
So He penalized them with hypocrisy in their hearts until the Day they will meet Him - because they failed Allah in what they promised Him and because they [habitually] used to lie.
[At-Tawbah 9:77]
A severe consequence; Allah placed hypocrisy in their hearts until death, because they did not fulfill their covenant. And if the vow is forbidden and its consequence may be severe, then the sane believer does not make a vow. If Allah has permitted you healing, you will be healed without a vow. And if Allah has not permitted you healing, you will not be healed even if you make a vow. Likewise, if Allah has made it easy for you to have a house that is your property to live in, it will be so without a vow. And if Allah does not permit it, it will not be. As for the answer to this question: It is obligatory to slaughter a camel as she vowed. Then, if it was in her mind and her intention at that time that it could be any camel, let her slaughter any camel, even a small al-hashi. And if she had nothing in her mind, she slaughters a camel that is valid as an udhiyah, namely: a two-year-old camel with five years of age. And when she slaughters it, she distributes it to the poor, because this is gratitude to Allah for His facilitation. Except if it was her intention to slaughter it to show joy and happiness, as some people do when they move into a new house and make a feast. In that case, we say: There is no harm in eating from it, feeding others, and giving charity
The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended.
