From the Foundations of Faith.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We mentioned that every human being is in loss except for those who possess four attributes, which the blessed one counts as signs of felicity: faith, righteous deeds, enjoining one another to truth, and enjoining one another to patience. Faith is: the affirmation of the heart, an affirmation that necessitates acceptance and submission; you affirm in your heart what must be affirmed. Jibril asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about faith? He said:
To believe in Allah, His Angels, His, Books, His Messengers, the Day of Judgement, and Al-Qadar, the good of it and the bad of it. أن تؤمن بالله وملائكته وكتبه ورسله واليوم الآخر والقدر خيره وشره

Muhammad the Trustworthy. He counts them for us, and you are standing.

The Shaykh : You have done well, may Allah bless you. This is faith. The Last Day: belief in it is a pillar of the pillars of faith. So what is the Last Day? The Last Day is the Day of Resurrection, but Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said: "Belief in the Last Day includes belief in everything the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us about that will occur after death". Belief in everything that will occur after death is included in belief in the Last Day. This is because when a person dies and is buried, and his family and companions leave him, two angels come to him and ask him about his Lord, his religion, and his Prophet. Every person is asked, until the person is seated in his grave, and it is said to him: Who is your Lord? The believer says: My Lord is Allah. What is your religion? My religion is Islam. Who is your Prophet? My Prophet is Muhammad. He answers correctly, and at that time a caller from the heavens calls out: Your servant has spoken the truth, so spread for him from Paradise and dress him from Paradise, and open for him a door to Paradise. I ask Allah to make me and you among these. As for the disbeliever or the hypocrite, when it is said to him: Who is your Lord? He says: Hmm, hmm, I do not know. What is your religion? Hmm, hmm, I do not know. Who is your Prophet? Hmm, hmm, I do not know. And at that time it is said to him: You did not know and you did not recite. And he is struck with an iron mallet, and he lets out a scream that everything hears except the two heavy ones (humans and jinn). Then a caller from the heavens calls out: Your servant has lied, so spread for him from the Fire and dress him from the Fire, and open for him a door to the Fire. May Allah protect us and you from that. This is part of belief in the Last Day. And from belief in the Last Day is: that you believe that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) is alone with His believing servant and says to him: Did you not do such and such? Did you not do such and such? Did you not do such and such of the sins? He says: Yes, O my Lord. And He makes him acknowledge his sins. Then Allah says to him: I concealed them from you in this world, and I forgive them for you today. As for the non-believer, and may Allah protect us from that, he is not reckoned with this reckoning. But their deeds are counted, and they are shamed by them, and they are called out over the heads of the witnesses:
These are the ones who lied against their Lord." Unquestionably, the curse of Allah is upon the wrongdoers. هَؤُلاءِ الَّذِينَ كَذَبُوا عَلَى رَبِّهِمْ أَلا لَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى الظَّالِمِينَ
[Hud 11:18]
From faith is: belief in divine decree, a pillar of the six pillars of faith. And divine decree is: the estimation of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). This is because Allah (Mighty and Majestic) wrote in the Preserved Tablet the measures of everything until the Hour. So what befalls a person was not going to miss him, and what missed him was not going to befall him. Allah created the Pen and said to it: Write. It said: My Lord, what should I write? He said: Write what is going to happen until the Day of Resurrection. So it ran in that hour with what is going to happen until the Day of Resurrection. But Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) created us and gave us will, choice, and selection; we choose going and returning, eating and drinking, and sleeping. Everything we choose, and praise be to Allah. Allah the Exalted gave us choice. We also choose righteous deeds or their opposite. So there is no excuse for a person, since Allah gave him choice, sent to him the messengers, and sent down to him the books.
