Warning Against the Trivialization of Sins

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And I, my brothers, warn myself and you against the trivialization of sins, for some people, when you advise them about a matter, say: "Look so-and-so is in a greater sin than my sin." This is an error and a deviation, for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) warned against the trivialization of sins and said:
Beware of the trivialization of sins, for the example of that is like a group of people who settled in a land, and a man brought a stick, and a man brought a stick, and a man brought a stick, and they gathered a lot of firewood and kindled a great fire. إياكم ومحقرات الذنوب، فإنما مثل ذلك كمثل قوم نزلوا أرضا فأتى رجل بعود ورجل بعود ورجل بعود فجمعوا حطبا كثيرا وأضرموا نارا كثيرا
.
This example applies exactly to the trivialization of sins, because these trivialized sins, which are nothing in the eyes of the one who commits them, gather upon the heart until it rusts and becomes dark. Allah the Exalted said:
No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning. كلا بل ران على قلوبهم ماكانوا يكسبون
[Al-Mutaffifin 83:14]
.
And the sign of that is that when a person is presented with the truth and the verses of Allah are recited to him, he does not benefit from them and does not see in them any effective power, as Allah the Exalted said:
(13) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples." (14) No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning. إذا تتلى عليه آياتنا قال أساطير الأولين * كلا بل ران على قلوبهم ماكانوا يكسبون
[Al-Mutaffifin 83:13-14]
.
These trivial matters that we trivialize pile up upon the heart, accumulate, and increase until it becomes dark and is sealed over, so that the truth does not reach it. So beware, my brothers, of these trivial matters, which may take away all of your faith, for that is their nature.
