The Shaykh : As for what concerns the fasting of Ramadan, the fasting of Ramadan is one of the pillars of Islam. And where is its position? It is the fourth of the pillars of Islam. And it—meaning the fasting—is that a person worships his Lord by abstaining from eating, drinking, sexual intercourse, and all things that break the fast, from the dawn until the setting of the sun. This is the legislated fasting: that a person worships Allah by abstaining from eating, drinking, sexual intercourse, and all things that break the fast, from what? From the dawn until the setting of the sun, based on the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He: [Al-Baqarah 2:187] meaning: women [Al-Baqarah 2:187]. This is the fasting: a person abstains from eating, drinking, sexual intercourse, and all things that break the fast for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, meaning he only intends to draw near to Allah, the Exalted, by leaving what he loves for what his Lord loves. However, the reality of fasting, the spirit of fasting, and the core of fasting is that a person fasts from what Allah has forbidden. The evidence for this is His saying, the Exalted: [Al-Baqarah 2:183]. For this reason, so that you may fear Allah, Mighty and Majestic. And for this reason, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Paradise, meaning: protection from sins. Paradise, meaning: protection from the punishment of the Fire, because whoever fasts Ramadan with faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.
