The questioner : He says: The Honorable Shaykh, we heard a fatwa from you regarding the khatmah. Is this regarding the supplication of the khatmah or the completion of the mushaf?
The Shaykh : And what did he hear from me?
The questioner : I do not know.
The Shaykh : I mean, the one who heard it from me is lying, and what did he hear? Is the questioner present? He is not present. So the answer is void.
I actually say: The strongest thing reported regarding the khatmah is what was narrated from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that when he intended to complete the Qur'an, he would gather his family and supplicate, in his house, with his family only.
As for in the prayer, I have not heard of it, neither from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) nor from any of the Companions. But some scholars recommended it. So the matter is one of scholarly disagreement among people. If some scholars recommended it and the imam behind whom we are praying holds that view, let us follow him. As for us deviating from the congregation of the mosque or lagging behind and not coming, that is a mistake. As long as the matter is one of disagreement, and I am present, I should not deviate from the people. Even Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him), despite his eagerness for the Sunnah and his adherence to it, said: "If a man follows an imam who recites qunut in the Fajr prayer, let him follow him and say 'Ameen' to his supplication". Do you understand, everyone? The Fajr prayer does not have qunut according to Imam Ahmad. And qunut is not recommended in it. And yet he said: "If you pray behind an imam who recites qunut, follow him and say 'Ameen' to his supplication". Why? Because one should not deviate from the congregation. So unity is all good. I wish our youth would consider this matter, meaning the matter of unity, and cast aside what causes differences of hearts behind their backs. If they did that, it would be a great good. But many of the youth now take a path that their brother does not take, and they oppose him for that. They speak about him in gatherings and warn against him, and this is a great error. Glory be to Allah! The people of good who want good, and who have a correct direction, are the ones who insult each other with titles, and they are the ones who split up. And the word of the people of evil? It is one. Is this not a disgrace for the people of good? Yes.
