The questioner : May Allah reward the honorableThe Shaykh : A salaried mosque imam was involved in a car accident and became bedridden five years ago. The mosque is still in his name, and he says: The Endowments Authority is aware of his condition. One of his sons may pray on his behalf only during his vacation, because the son works outside the area. He has appointed one of the visitors as his substitute on a conditional basis. So what is your advice to this imam? May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : My advice to this imam is to fear Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and not to take money except for what is his right. It is not permissible for him to take from the public treasury compensation for work he did not perform. It is obligatory for him to submit his resignation and leave the mosque to someone who is able to perform its duties. The fact that the Endowments Authority knows this does not serve as an excuse for him before Allah, because Allah the Exalted said:
O you who have believed, do not consume one another's wealth unjustly يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لا تَأْكُلُوا أَمْوَالَكُمْ بَيْنَكُمْ بِالْبَاطِلِ
[An-Nisa 4:29]
. And any money a person takes without compensation, other than as a gift or present or the like, is consuming wealth by falsehood. Yes.
So my advice to this brother is to submit his resignation, and I ask Allah the Exalted to lift from him the illness that has befallen him.
Yes.
