Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Then, we hear in the supplication of Witr:
Sahih Ibn Hibban 7:117 So, what is meant by guidance here?
Is the meaning: "Show us the truth among those You showed the truth," or is the meaning: "Show us the truth and grant us success in following it"?
The answer is the second: that the meaning is "Show us the truth and grant us success in following the truth." This is because the complete, beneficial guidance is that in which Allah combines knowledge and action for the servant. For guidance without action is not beneficial; rather, it is harmful, because if a person does not act upon what he knows, his knowledge becomes a burden upon him.
An example of knowledge-based guidance without action is the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Fussilat 41:17] What is the meaning of "We guided them"?
It means We made the path clear to them and conveyed the knowledge to them, but they—may Allah protect us from that—preferred blindness over guidance.
And among that is also guidance which is knowledge and clarification of the truth, the saying of Allah Blessed and Exalted is He to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 25:798.
The meaning of "You guide"? It means You show, clarify, and teach people the straight path.
As for guidance in the sense of success, it is like the saying of the one praying:[Al-Fatihah 1:6] When you say: [Al-Fatihah 1:6], are you asking Allah for knowledge without action, or action without knowledge, or both knowledge and action? Tell me the truth.
The students: Knowledge and action.
The Shaykh : When you say:[Al-Fatihah 1:6], do you realize that you are asking Allah for knowledge and action?
In any case, a person should, when he supplicates to Allah:, realize that he is asking his Lord for knowledge and action: knowledge which is guidance, and action which is success. And I think—and knowledge is with Allah—that this is absent from the minds of many people when they say: [Al-Fatihah 1:6].
And His saying the Exalted to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 25:798.
What kind of guidance is this?
This is guidance of showing the way and clarification.
But[Al-Qasas 28:56] this guidance is guidance of success for action. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cannot ever grant anyone success for righteous action. If he could have done so, he would have been able to guide his uncle Abu Talib. He tried with him until he said to him at his death: Sahih al-Bukhari 3884.
But the word of Allah the Mighty and Majestic had preceded him, that he is among the people of the Fire—may Allah protect us from that.
So he did not say "There is no god but Allah," and the last thing he said was:Sahih al-Bukhari 1360.
But Allah the Exalted permitted His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to intercede for him, not because he was his uncle, but because he had made a praiseworthy effort in defending the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Islam.
So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) interceded for his uncle, and he was in shallow fire, with two slippers on his feet from which his brain boiled. Two slippers of fire from which his brain boiled, and he is the least of the people of the Fire in punishment.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih al-Bukhari 3883.
I say: If we say in the supplication of Qunut: "O Allah, guide us among those You have guided," then we are asking for both types of guidance: guidance of knowledge, and guidance of action.
What brought this phrase to this place? I mean, if a person limited himself and said only: "O Allah, guide us," the purpose would be achieved. But why did "among those You have guided" come?
So that this would be from the category of seeking nearness to Allah the Mighty and Majestic through His blessings upon those He guided, that He bless us with guidance as well. Meaning, we ask You for guidance, for that is in accordance with Your mercy and wisdom and Your prior favor, for You have guided other people,.
O Allah, guide us among those You have guided
Is the meaning: "Show us the truth among those You showed the truth," or is the meaning: "Show us the truth and grant us success in following it"?
The answer is the second: that the meaning is "Show us the truth and grant us success in following the truth." For guidance without action is not beneficial; rather, it is harmful, because if a person does not act upon what he knows, his knowledge becomes a burden upon him.
An example of knowledge-based guidance without action is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And as for Thamud, We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance
It means We made the path clear to them and conveyed the knowledge to them, but they—may Allah protect us from that—preferred blindness over guidance.
And among that is also guidance which is knowledge and clarification of the truth, the saying of Allah Blessed and Exalted is He to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
And indeed, you guide to a straight path, a straight path
The meaning of "You guide"? It means You show, clarify, and teach people the straight path.
As for guidance in the sense of success, it is like the saying of the one praying:

اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيم َGuide us to the straight path -
The students: Knowledge and action.

But
Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like
O my uncle! Say: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, an expression I will defend your case with, before Allah.

So he did not say "There is no god but Allah," and the last thing he said was:

had It not been for me, he would have been in the bottom of the (Hell) Fire.
