The questioner : The Difficulty of the Agonies of Death, O Noble Shaykh: Do They Mitigate Sins? Likewise, Does the Illness That Precedes Death Mitigate Sins? We Request Guidance on This.
The Shaykh : Yes, everything that befalls a person, whether it is illness, hardship, worry, or grief, even a thorn that pricks him, is an expiation for his sins. Then, if he is patient and seeks reward from Allah, he will have, in addition to the expiation, the reward for that patience with which he faced this calamity that befell him. There is no difference in this between what occurs at the time of death and what occurs before it; thus, calamities are expiations for sins for the believer. This is indicated by the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Ash-Shuraa 42:30] If that is for what our hands have earned, this indicates that it is an expiation for what we have done and what we have earned. Likewise, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us that: Sahih Ibn Hibban 11:15. Yes.
