The questioner : May Allah reward me, and I have performed the obligatory Hajj. My questions are: when I exited my state of ihram on the tenth of Dhul-Hijjah after stoning the large pillar, I shortened some of the hair, but I did not know that the intention was to shorten all the hair. Another point: on the eleventh day, after stoning the three pillars, I was severely exhausted to the point where I could not walk, especially since my health is weak; I am not sick, but I could not walk on foot except by placing ice on my head. On the twelfth day, which is the second day of stoning the three pillars, my companions informed me that I could not stone the pillars due to the heavy crowd and heat, and this would be a great hardship for me, fearing that something like what happened yesterday might occur. So I appointed one of my companions to stone the pillars on my behalf. After that, I went to perform the farewell tawaf, and then to al-Madinah al-Munawwarah to visit the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The question is: Is my Hajj valid? And is it obligatory for me to offer a sacrificial animal (hady) for not shortening the hair, considering that, as I mentioned, I did not know at the time that the intention of shortening the hair was to shorten all of it? If there is a sacrificial animal required, how do I perform it and when? And regarding my appointment of one of my companions to stone the three pillars on the twelfth of Dhul-Hijjah, given the health conditions I described, is this valid, or what should I do? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
As for what concerns shortening the hair on the head, since you only shortened a small part of it while ignorant of the ruling, and then you exited your state of ihram, there is nothing upon you in this exit because you were ignorant. However, you must still complete the shortening of the hair on your head. On this occasion, I advise my brother listeners that if they wish to engage in any act of worship, they should not enter into it until they know the limits of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in it, so that they do not become entangled in a matter that compromises this act of worship. As it is said, prevention is better than cure. And better than that is the saying of Allah the Exalted to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): And the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Az-Zumar 39:9] So, worshipping Allah (Mighty and Majestic) with insight, knowing His limits in this act of worship, is far better than worshipping Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) in ignorance, or merely imitating people who know or do not know. How many such problems occur among pilgrims, those who fast, and those who pray, who worship Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in ignorance and compromise these acts of worship, and then come to the scholars to seek a ruling on what happened to them. If you had learned the limits of Hajj before engaging in it, many of your difficulties would have been resolved, and you would also have benefited others with what you learned of the limits of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He).
I return to say that regarding the shortening, you can now complete what is obligatory for you in it, because many of the scholars say that shortening and shaving do not have a limited time, especially since you were in this state of ignorance and thought that what you shortened was sufficient to fulfill the obligation.
As for your appointment of someone to stone on your behalf on the twelfth day, if you were in the condition you described in your question, unable to stone yourself due to your weakness and inability to withstand the sun, and unable to delay until you could stone at night or on the thirteenth day, then in this case, you may appoint someone, and there is nothing upon you for that. Because the correct opinion is that if a person is permitted to appoint someone due to his inability to stone himself, neither during the day nor at night, then there is nothing upon him. This is contrary to those who say that he appoints someone and is required to offer a sacrificial animal (blood), because if we say that appointment is permissible, the agent stands in the place of the principal.
