Q: Allah has blessed me with the performance of the obligatory Hajj in the year 1411 AH. While I was performing the stoning of the three pillars on the eleventh day of Dhu al-Hijjah, I was coming from al-Masjid al-Khaif in Mina heading toward the stoning of the pillars. When I reached the first pillar, I asked where to begin, and they told me: "Start from there," meaning from the last pillar, which is the first one from the direction of Makkah . I did so and stoned from the first one from the direction of Makkah , then the middle one, then the small one. On the second day, I climbed the large one, and I was also coming from al-Masjid al-Khaif . A group of people were with me, and they said to me: "Start from the first chamber from the direction of al-Khaif ." I did so, and then I hastened and traveled to my job in Riyadh . So the question here is: What is the ruling on my stoning of these pillars, and are they valid or not? Please inform us, may Allah reward you. And is it necessary to throw the pebble
so that it strikes the concrete pillar and then falls into the pool? What is the ruling for one who does otherwise regarding the stoning of his pebbles? Please inform us, may Allah reward you, and may Allah make you a storehouse for Islam and the Muslims, and may He benefit the Muslim community with you, if Allah wills, Lord of the worlds. And peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
A : Your stoning of the pillars on the eleventh day is not valid, because you began with the Pillar of 'Aqabah. The correct procedure is to begin with the small pillar, then the middle one, then the large one (the Pillar of 'Aqabah). It was obligatory for you to repeat the stoning, even on the twelfth day after the sun passes its zenith. Since you did not do so, you must pay a fidyah (ransom payment) to make up for the defect in the ritual. The fidyah is a sheep that is acceptable as an 'Id sacrifice, to be slaughtered in Makkah and distributed to the poor of the Haram. If you are unable to do so, then you must fast for ten days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
