The questioner : The saying of some of the worshippers in the tashahhud: “O Allah, send blessings upon our master Muhammad and upon the family of our master Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim”. What is your opinion regarding our saying “our master”?
The Shaykh : No rational person doubts that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the master of the children of Adam, for every rational believer believes in that. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is the master of mankind. The master is the one who possesses honor, obedience, and authority. Obedience to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is part of obedience to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He)[An-Nisa 4:80]. We and other believers do not doubt that our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is our master, our best, and our most excellent in the sight of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and that he is the one who is obeyed in what he commands, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him. Part of the implication of believing that he is the master who is obeyed, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, is that we do not go beyond what has been legislated for us in speech, action, or belief. Among the things he legislated for us regarding how to send blessings upon him in the tashahhud is that we say: Sahih al-Bukhari 3370 or similar descriptions that have been transmitted regarding how to send blessings upon him, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. I do not know of any description that was transmitted in the form mentioned by the questioner, which is: “O Allah, send blessings upon our master Muhammad and upon the family of our master Muhammad”. If this form was not transmitted from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then it is better that we do not send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with it, but rather we send blessings upon him with the form he taught us.
And on this occasion, I would like to point out that every person who believes that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is our master, the implication of this belief is that the person does not go beyond what he legislated, and does not fall short of it. So one does not innovate in the religion of Allah what is not part of it, and does not fall short of what is part of the religion of Allah. For this is the reality of the mastership that is the right of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) over us. Accordingly, those who innovate in dhikr or in sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in ways that the Shari'ah did not bring through the tongue of his Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) contradict the claim that this person who innovates believes that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the master. Because the implication of this belief is that one does not go beyond what is legislated and does not fall short of it. So let a person reflect and contemplate what he means by his saying, so that the matter becomes clear to him and he knows that he is a follower, not a legislator.

He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah
من يطع الرسول فقد أطاع اللهO Allah! Send Your Mercy on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your Mercy on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious.
