The questioner : I led the people in the 'Isha' prayer, and in the last rak'ah, after rising from the bowing, I supplicated to Allah, the Exalted, to send us rain.
Do not call the Messenger "our master" in the prayer لا تسيدوا في الصلاة
What is your ruling on this?

The Shaykh : First, we say that your qunut for seeking rain is not prescribed, because that was not reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). Seeking rain was reported from him either in the Friday sermon, or in the sermon for the prayer for rain, or at a time not restricted to a specific act. As for the qunut for this purpose, it is not prescribed.
Second, the statement of the one who says, "O Allah, send blessings upon our master Muhammad," carries no blame and there is nothing wrong with it. As for the hadith mentioned regarding the prohibition of calling the Messenger "our master" in the prayer, it is a batil (invalid) hadith with no basis. However, it should be noted that a person should not mention the word "our master" in the salawat upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) except where it was reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). What was reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) is that he did not mention the word "our master." Rather, when they said, "O Messenger of Allah! Teach us how to greet you and how to send blessings upon you," he said:
He told us to say, “O God, bless Muhammad and Muhammad’s family as Thou didst bless Abraham and Abraham’s family. Thou art indeed praiseworthy and glorious. O God, grant favours to Muhammad and Muhammad’s family as Thou didst grant favours to Abraham and Abraham’s family. Thou art indeed praiseworthy and glorious.”

This does not mean that the one who did not mention "our master" has diminished the right of the Messenger (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him). Rather, the one who did not mention it in a place where it was not reported is more reverent than the one who mentions it in a place where it was not reported. This is because the one who did not mention it in a place where it was not reported follows the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) more strictly than the one who mentioned it in a place where it was not mentioned. Accordingly, the one who omitted it in a place where it was not mentioned is the one who truly made Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) a master, in that we do not exceed what he guided us to, and we do not transgress what he prescribed for us.
Let no one understand from our statement that we do not believe that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) is our master. Rather, he is our master, and indeed the master of the children of Adam, as is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). However, the greater the lordship of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is in the heart of the believer, the greater his following of his Sunnah, such that he does not add to it or subtract from it.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
