The questioner : Your Eminence, is the addition of "al-Sayyid" when praying upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), to "Sayyidina Muhammad" (our master Muhammad), established?
The Shaykh : I do not know that it is established. It is known that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) taught his ummah how to pray upon him by saying:Mishkat al-Masabih 919, and "Sayyidina" (our master) was not mentioned in it.
There is no doubt that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) is the master of the children of Adam, that he is our leader and our role model, and that there is no good for us if we deviate from his Sunnah by even a hair's breadth. However, it is not our right to add to what he taught his ummah, despite our belief that he is our master, that he is our intimate friend, and that he is the most beloved of people to us, more beloved to us than ourselves, our mothers, and our fathers. It is obligatory to prioritize loving him and believing in his lordship. Part of loving him and acknowledging his lordship is adhering to his Sunnah, not falling short of it and not going beyond it.

He told us to say, “O God, bless Muhammad and Muhammad’s family as Thou didst bless Abraham and Abraham’s family. Thou art indeed praiseworthy and glorious.
