The questioner : A listener from Sudan asks about the saying of Allah the Exalted: I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan:
And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about Dhul-Qarnayn. Say, "I will recite to you about him a report."
[Al-Kahf 18:83]

The Shaykh : The saying of Allah the Exalted:
And they ask you about Dhul-Qarnayn
His story was well known, especially among the People of the Book. He was a righteous king in the time of the Khalil Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and it is said that he circumambulated the House with him, and Allah knows best. This righteous man was granted authority over the earth by Allah, and He gave him every means of kingship to achieve victory and subdue his enemies.
So he followed a path
meaning he took a path that led him to his objective.
Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it [as if] setting in a spring of dark mud, and he found near it a people
[Al-Kahf 18:86]
So he took control of them, and Allah gave him the choice regarding them.
Allah said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, either you punish [them] or else adopt among them [a way of] goodness."
[Al-Kahf 18:86]
So he judged between them with justice, saying:
(87) He said, "As for one who wrongs, we will punish him. Then he will be returned to his Lord, and He will punish him with a terrible punishment. (88) But as for one who believes and does righteousness, he will have a reward of Paradise, and we will speak to him from our command with ease."
[Al-Kahf 18:87-88]
Then he proceeded toward the rising of the sun.
Until, when he came to the rising of the sun, he found it rising on a people
[Al-Kahf 18:90]
They had no shelter to protect them from its heat; they had no buildings or trees, but lived in the daytime in grottos and caves, and at night they sought their livelihood. And Allah, Mighty and Majestic, was aware of this man in all his circumstances; he traveled with the knowledge and guidance of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, as He said:
And We had encompassed [all] that he had in knowledge.
[Al-Kahf 18:91]
.
Then he proceeded.
Until, when he reached [a pass] between two mountains, he found beside them a people who could hardly understand [his] speech.
[Al-Kahf 18:93]
Because they were foreigners whose language was not understood and who did not understand the language of others, but they complained to this righteous king, Dhul-Qarnayn, that Gog and Magog were corrupting the earth. They are two nations from the descendants of Adam, as established in the authentic hadith. The reports and Israelitic narratives about these two nations, namely Gog and Magog, have no basis in truth; rather, Gog and Magog are from the descendants of Adam and have the form of the descendants of Adam. As it came in the authentic hadith that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah the Exalted says, meaning on the Day of Resurrection: “O Adam,” so he says, “At your service and obedience,” and He says: “Bring forth from your descendants a group for the Fire.” He said: “O my Lord, and what is the group for the Fire?” He said: “Out of every thousand, nine hundred and ninety, all of them in the Fire except one out of the thousand.”
This was a great matter for the Companions, and they said: O Messenger of Allah, which one of us is that one? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“Rejoice, for you are among two nations that were not numerous in anything except in the case of Ya'juj and Ma'juj.”
This is clear and explicit evidence that they, namely Gog and Magog, are from the descendants of Adam. Thus, their form and conditions are exactly like those of the descendants of Adam, but they are a people who, may Allah protect us, are naturally disposed to corruption in the earth, destroying the interests of creation, killing them, and other things that constitute corruption in the earth of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. So they said to him:
Shall we make for you a wage
meaning wealth.
that you might make between us and them a barrier?" على أن تجعل بيننا وبينهم سداً
[Al-Kahf 18:94]
So he informed them that Allah, Glorified and Exalted, had given him of kingship and establishment what is better than the wealth they were giving him.
He said, "That in which my Lord has established me is better [than what you offer], but assist me with strength قال ما مكني فيه ربي خير فأعينوني بقوة
[Al-Kahf 18:95]
meaning practical strength in the form of wealth, tools, and the like.
I will make between you and them a dam.
[Al-Kahf 18:95]
Then he asked them for bars of iron, meaning pieces of iron, and they arranged them one upon another until they reached the tops of the two mountains.
Bring me sheets of iron" - until, when he had leveled [them] between the two mountain walls, he said, "Blow [with آتوني زبر الحديد حتى إذا ساوى بين الصدفين قال انفخوا
[Al-Kahf 18:96]
So they kindled fire upon it and blew on it until the iron became burning fire, then he poured upon it a mixture, meaning molten copper, until this piece of iron solidified and became a solid iron barrier.
So Gog and Magog were unable to pass over it
[Al-Kahf 18:97]
meaning they would climb over it.
nor were they able [to effect] in it any penetration.
[Al-Kahf 18:97]
meaning they would dig through it from below. So it became a barrier between Gog and Magog and these people. His story is well known and famous; Allah the Exalted mentioned it in Surat al-Kahf at its end. So whoever wants more knowledge of it, let him read what the trusted scholars of tafsir have written about this great story.
