The questioner : Some of the scholars among us, when they wish to deliver a speech or a sermon from time to time, stand up and say, “Send blessings upon the Messenger of Allah,” then speak briefly, and then say to them afterward, “Send blessings upon the Messenger of Allah.” Is this reported from the noble Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?

The Shaykh : What is reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in sermons and exhortations is that he begins with praising Allah and extolling Him. There is no harm if a person sends blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) after that, so he recites the tashahhud: “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger,” and he sends blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then he says, “As for what follows,” and he mentions the topic of the sermon.
However, some preachers, if they see negligence among the people, some of them say, “Say, ‘There is no god but Allah,’” or “Remember Allah,” and some of them say, “Send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him),” intending thereby to alert the people. And some of them say, “Pay attention, listen,” and the like of that. What appears to me is that these people who say these things during the sermon or exhortation do not intend thereby to worship Allah the Exalted with that, but rather they intend thereby to alert those being exhortated and those to whom the sermon is being delivered. I see no harm in such a thing, if Allah wills.
