The questioner : He says: I have a sum of money amounting to two thousand five hundred dinars, and more than a year has passed over it. Is there zakah on it, and what is the amount? Knowing that the currency used in Iraq is the dinar. Please issue a ruling for us. May Allah reward you with good?
The Shaykh : Yes. If a person has paper currency, it is in the position of the two metals, meaning in the position of gold and silver. So, its zakah is due on him every year, and the amount of zakah is one-quarter of a tenth. The method of calculating it is to divide the money you have by forty; whatever comes out of the division is the zakah. For example, if you have forty thousand, its zakah is one thousand. If you have four hundred, its zakah is ten thousand, and so on. You divide what you have by forty, and whatever comes out of the division is the zakah. However, it must be known that the obligation of zakah is conditioned by the completion of the nisab (minimum threshold for zakah). So, whoever has money that does not reach the nisab, there is no zakah on it. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)Sunan an-Nasa'i 2486Sahih (Darussalam) and five awqiya, which is two hundred dirhams, because the awqiyah is forty Islamic dirhams, so five awqiya becomes two hundred dirhams. This was explicitly stated in the book that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote regarding alms, and this book was elevated to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
The questioner : May Allah send prayers and peace upon him.
