Is there zakah due on jewelry that is used?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: My mother has nine gold earrings, a small necklace, and a number of rings, and they are kept for use. Is she required to pay zakah on them? And is it permissible for me to pay the zakah on her behalf from my own money?
A: If the aforementioned earrings, necklace, and rings reach the nisab for zakah, which is twenty mithqals, equivalent to eleven and a half Saudi riyals, or ninety-two grams, then she is required to pay zakah on them according to the most correct of the scholars' opinions, due to the generality of the scriptural evidence. However, it is not obligatory to pay it out of the jewelry itself; rather, there is no harm in paying the zakah on her behalf from other wealth.
There is no harm in paying the zakah from your wealth on behalf of your mother, provided she gives you permission to do so. The rate is one-quarter of a tenth, which is twenty-five out of a thousand, or fifty out of two thousand, and so on; as the wealth increases, the obligatory amount increases.
I ask Allah to guide everyone to what pleases Him, and may peace and the mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you.
