The questioner : Muhammad is with us in this session, and we welcome you, O honorable Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Welcome to you.

The questioner : We return to the message from the listener Ali Ahmad al-Zahrani from the land of Zahran. He has a question; in fact, he is asking for your advice, O honorable Shaykh, regarding the following books: "Riyad al-Salihin"?

The Shaykh : Yes. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. Before answering the question, I would like to mention to my brother listeners, including the questioner, that among the most important things one should care for—indeed, it is obligatory to care for—is the Book of Allah the Exalted. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did not move on from ten verses until they had learned them and the knowledge and practice contained therein. Therefore, caring for the Book of Allah the Exalted is obligatory, and reflecting on its meaning is the wisdom behind its revelation, and remembering it is another wisdom that branches out from reflecting on it. Allah the Exalted said:
[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded. كتاب أنزلناه إليك مبارك ليدبروا ءاياته و ليتذكر أولو الألباب
[Sad 38:29]
Many people care for hadith books and the Sunnah, and there is no doubt that this is good.

The questioner : Very well.

The Shaykh : But you find him neglecting the Noble Qur'an; he does not know its meaning, does not reflect on it, and does not read what the scholars have written in its exegesis. This is a deficiency. What a person should do in the order of his learning is to begin, above all else, with understanding the Book of Allah the Exalted, then follow with the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and what the scholars have written about it in their works. After this, we return to the answer to the questioner's query and say that this book he referred to, which is "Riyad al-Salihin", is a valuable and beneficial book. It contains verses with which the author (may Allah have mercy on him) introduces the chapters in many of the book's sections. It contains authentic and good hadiths, and it is very rare to find weak hadiths in it. But the book is useful; it is useful for the student of knowledge and useful for the general public.

The questioner : Very well.

The Shaykh : Yes.
