The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*: " The Book of Supplications " :
Supplications: This is the plural of *du'a* (supplication), and it is the supplication of a person to his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, saying, "O Lord, O Lord," and the like, asking Allah the Exalted to give him what he wants and to remove from him what he does not want.
Then he said: " The Chapter on the Command to Supplicate and Its Virtue ", and he mentioned verses from it, including the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Ghafir 40:60] This is a statement from Allah the Exalted and a promise, and Allah the Exalted does not break His promise.
[Ghafir 40:60]: The intended meaning of supplication here is the supplication of worship and the supplication of asking. As for the supplication of worship, it is that a person performs the worship of Allah, because if you were to ask the one who performs the worship of Allah, "Why did you establish the prayer? Why did you give zakah? Why did you fast? Why did you perform Hajj? Why did you strive in the path of Allah? Why were you dutiful to your parents? Why did you maintain family ties?" he would say, "I do so for the sake of the pleasure of Allah, Mighty and Majestic." This is a worship that includes supplication.
As for the supplication of asking, it is that you ask Allah for something, saying, "O Lord, forgive me; O Lord, have mercy on me; O Lord, provide for me," and the like. This is also worship, as came in the hadith:.
It is considered worship because of the sincerity of turning to Allah the Exalted and the acknowledgment of His favor. Thus, His saying:[Ghafir 40:60] includes both the supplication of worship and the supplication of asking.
: The response in the supplication of worship is its acceptance, and the response in the supplication of asking is giving the person what he asked for.
This is a promise from Allah the Exalted, but there must be certain matters; that is, there are conditions for the answering of supplication:
Among them is sincerity: you must be sincere to Allah, so that you are a true supplicant to Him. If you are in worship, do not associate anything with Him; do not worship Him out of showing off or for reputation, or so that it is said, "So-and-so is a pilgrim, so-and-so is generous, so-and-so fasts a lot." If you say this, you have nullified your deed. So sincerity is necessary. In asking as well, supplicate to Allah while feeling that you are in need of Him and that He is free of need from you and capable of giving you what you ask.
It is also necessary that the supplication contain no transgression. If there is transgression in it, Allah does not accept it, even if it is from a father to his son or from a mother to her son. If there is transgression in it, Allah does not accept it, due to the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-A'raf 7:55]: So if a person supplicates with a sin, by asking his Lord for something forbidden—seeking refuge in Allah from that—this is not accepted, because he is a transgressor. Even if he asks for what is not possible by the Shari'ah, such as saying, "O Allah, make me a Prophet," this is not permissible and is a transgression that is not accepted. Even if he supplicates against an oppressed person, it is not accepted. Even if a woman supplicates against her son because he loves his wife, it is not accepted. Likewise, if a father supplicates against his son because he associates with good people, it is not accepted. It is a condition that there be no transgression in the supplication.
The third condition: It is required that one supplicate to Allah the Exalted while being certain of the response. It is not a supplication of trial, because some people may supplicate to try and see whether the supplication is accepted or not. This is not accepted from them. Supplicate to Allah while being certain that Allah the Exalted will answer. If you supplicated to Him while in doubt, Allah does not accept it from you.
The fourth condition: Avoiding the forbidden, by not being a person who eats the forbidden. So whoever eats the forbidden, whether from usury or interest, or from deception or lying, or the like, his supplication is not answered. The evidence for this is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family): Indeed, Allah is Pure and does not accept anything but what is pure. And Allah commanded the believers with what He commanded the messengers, saying: “O messengers, eat from the good things and do righteous deeds.” And He said: “O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is Him you worship.” Then he mentioned the man who travels a long distance, disheveled and covered in dust, stretching his hands toward the sky, saying, “O my Lord, O my Lord,” while his food is forbidden, his clothing is forbidden, and he is nourished with what is forbidden. How then will he be answered?, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) considered it unlikely that Allah would answer this person, even though he did what is among the causes of response, which would be worthy of being answered. But because he was eating the forbidden, it became distant that Allah would accept from him. We ask Allah for well-being. These are four conditions for supplication that must be observed, and Allah is the One who grants success.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
We have previously spoken about explaining the virtue of supplication and the conditions for response. In this noble verse, Allah the Exalted says:[Al-Baqarah 2:186] The address is to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Allah says to him: [Al-Baqarah 2:186] meaning: Am I near or am I not near?
So the answer is: And His nearness, Exalted and Majestic is He, is a nearness befitting His majesty and greatness. It is not a nearness of place, because He, Glorified and Exalted is He, is above everything, above the seven heavens, above the Throne. But it is a nearness befitting His majesty and greatness. So, with His great elevation that has no end except by His sacred Self, He is nonetheless near. He is near in His elevation and far in His nearness, Exalted and Majestic is He. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his companions one day: Mishkat al-Masabih 2303 But He is above His heavens.
The seven heavens and the seven earths are in His hand, Exalted and Majestic is He, like a mustard seed in one of our hands. So He encompasses everything; there is no god but He.
[Al-Baqarah 2:186]: A nearness befitting His majesty and greatness, and not a nearness of place, meaning: that He is not with us on the earth, but He is above His heavens, Exalted and Majestic is He.
[Al-Baqarah 2:186]: This is the proof that He answers the call of the supplicant when he calls Him in truth, and turns to Him and becomes poor before Him, and knows that no one removes evil but Allah, and that he is in need of his Lord. So if he calls Him in this state, He, Glorified and Exalted is He, answers him. But it is necessary to observe the previous conditions.
[Al-Baqarah 2:186] So let them respond to Me, meaning: to what I called them to, which is His worship, Glorified and Exalted is He. Among this is that they call upon Me, because Allah commanded that: [Ghafir 40:60].
With true faith, with no doubt accompanying it and no disbelief accompanying it. And then Allah the Exalted will be swiftest to them in response.
And the opposite of guidance is foolishness. This is also one of the verses that encourage supplication, that a person supplicates to Allah the Exalted with faith and sincerity.
Then the author mentioned the fourth verse, which is the saying of Allah the Exalted:[An-Naml 27:62] The interrogation here is for negation and denial, meaning: no one answers the distressed when he calls Him except Allah. So Allah the Exalted answers the call of the distressed, even if he is a disbeliever. Even the disbeliever, if he is distressed and calls upon his Lord, He answers him. Allah the Exalted said: [Luqman 31:32] So the distressed person, whom necessity drives to call upon Allah, even if he is a disbeliever, Allah answers his call. So what about if he is a believer? It is even more so. So no one answers the distressed except Allah.
As for other than Allah the Exalted, He may answer and He may not answer. Perhaps you call for help from a person while you are drowning or on fire, you call for his help, and he does not answer you and does not save you. But Allah the Exalted, if you are in need of Him and call upon Him, He answers you[An-Naml 27:62] meaning: He removes it.
[An-Naml 27:62] meaning: there is no god with Allah who answers the distressed when he calls Him and removes the evil.
And in this is a refutation and invalidation of what the worshippers of idols claim, that they answer them and help them. For this has no truth. Whoever you call upon other than Allah, he does not answer. Even the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), if you called upon him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, save me from this hardship," you would be an associate of partners with Allah, a disbeliever. And the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) would disavow you and fight you if he were alive, because no one is called upon except Allah. Everyone who is called upon.
And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you."
Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors.
And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me

So the answer is:
Indeed, I am near
He whom you are supplicating is nearer to each of you than the neck of his riding-beast.
The seven heavens and the seven earths are in His hand, Exalted and Majestic is He, like a mustard seed in one of our hands. So He encompasses everything; there is no god but He.

Perhaps they will be guided
Then the author mentioned the fourth verse, which is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil and makes you inheritors of the earth
And when waves come over them like canopies, they supplicate Allah, sincere to Him in religion. But when He delivers them to the land, there are [some] of them who are moderate [in faith]. And none rejects Our signs except everyone treacherous and ungrateful.
As for other than Allah the Exalted, He may answer and He may not answer.
