I am a student at school, and we have a teacher (female) who is not wearing the hijab and shows her hair, knowing that this teacher is not Muslim.

The questioner : He says that he is a student at school, and they have a female teacher who is not wearing the hijab and shows her hair, knowing that this female teacher is not Muslim. So, what is obligatory for us students to do?

The Shaykh : It is obligatory for you to seek or look for another school where the teacher is not a woman, because avoiding fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) is obligatory, and your remaining in this school is a cause of fitnah. If you do not find any other, there is no blame on you for remaining in it, but lower your gaze as much as you can and avoid talking to her frequently as much as you can. This is like what is found in markets, for example, where there are women who are tabarruj (a woman's display of her adornment) and wearing perfume, and yet we do not tell people to refrain from going down to their markets. Rather, we say: go down to your markets, enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong as much as you can, lower your gaze, and minimize conversation except out of necessity. We have important rules from the Shari'ah (Islamic sacred law) in this matter, such as the saying of Allah the Exalted:
and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty وَمَا جَعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ مِنْ حَرَجٍ
[Al-Hajj 22:78]
and such as His saying:
Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ بِكُمُ الْيُسْرَ وَلا يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ الْعُسْرَ
[Al-Baqarah 2:185]
and such as the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Indeed, this religion is easy إن هذا الدين يسر
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5034Sahih (Darussalam)
So, if we do not find, or if we are unable to remove this munkar (what is wrong), and we are in need of going down to the market or remaining in the school, I hope that there is no blame on us for that. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you. We return to the message from the listener in Jeddah, from a student at King Abdulaziz University.
