Is it obligatory to calculate the lunar year from the beginning for each threshold, or is it sufficient to calculate it at the start of the year and then pay zakah on the whole amount after the year has passed?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : There is a question I have, before your question now, regarding this zakah. For example, I, my group, and my brothers: a simple example. I am a man who, on this day, has reached the threshold for zakah. For instance, at the beginning of the month, I reached the zakah threshold!

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner : Zakah became obligatory on me. At the end of the lunar year, I had reached the zakah threshold, for example, I had two hundred or three hundred dinars, which is the zakah threshold. So during the year, my income increases until it reaches ten thousand dinars. Is zakah obligatory only on what I have at the end of the lunar year, or on all this amount?

The Shaykh : The entire amount in the box.

The questioner : The entire amount?

The Shaykh : The entire amount.

The questioner : Many people argue, saying: We have read and acted. They say: The amount on which the lunar year has completed is the one that is subject to zakah!

The Shaykh : Yes, the completion of the lunar year is a condition for the obligation of zakah on wealth for the first time. But the situation you are describing now is different. A person whose lunar year has passed but whose wealth has not reached the threshold, then he owes no zakah.

The questioner : There is nothing required of him.

The Shaykh : Okay, but as I said earlier: In this month, the wealth you have reached the threshold.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : You recorded it with you. When it reached the threshold at the beginning of the month, do you want to wait a year until it comes out? During this year, may Allah bless you in your wealth, and it was added to this capital. When the lunar year of the first threshold ends, you pay zakah on all this wealth. The second opinion is: No, you must date this second threshold whenever it is completed, and this third threshold. This is not practical. This is called imposing what is unbearable. And Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says:
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
. Therefore, the first opinion is the one that should be acted upon. First: to remove hardship, because if one is obligated, especially if a person is wealthy in one aspect, and the nature of his dealings is completely different, yes, this leads to hardship. Second: this is more beneficial for the poor and the needy.

The questioner : Naturally.

The Shaykh : The one who said regarding them:
within whose wealth is a known right (25) For the petitioner and the deprived - فِي أَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَعْلُومٌ * لِلسَّائِلِ وَالْمَحْرُومِ
[Al-Ma'arij 70:24-25]
. For this reason and that reason, we say: It is obligatory to pay zakah on all the wealth you have, as long as the lunar year has passed on a portion of it.

The questioner : Even if some of it was from last month.

Another questioner : Is there a question, my teacher?

The Shaykh : Ah, even if it was one day before paying the zakah.

The questioner : One day.
