The questioner : One of our Iraqi brothers.

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner : And he means to inquire from you.

The Shaykh: Go ahead.

The questioner : The question says: I am the youngest of the males in a family that does not pray and is far from the religion. I entered the Faculty of Engineering, then Allah granted me guidance and led me, so I began to pray. Then I desired to seek Islamic knowledge according to the methodology of the Salaf, and I began to suffer from the studies in the faculty and the free mixing of men and women there. So I left the studies in the faculty, but my family is asking me to return to the faculty to obtain the degree and boast about it, especially since my brothers have obtained degrees. Is it obligatory for me to return to the faculty so that my parents will be pleased? And what are the limits of obedience to parents for me? May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : Can he not obey his parents?

The questioner : Yes, our Shaykh?

The Shaykh : Can he not obey his parents?

The questioner: No.

The Shaykh : Then the question is not applicable.

The questioner : But he can by way of transfer.

The Shaykh : How can he not be able to, and then be able to by way of transfer? What does this condition mean?

The questioner : By a religious violation, O our Shaykh.

The Shaykh : A religious violation.

The questioner : Yes, meaning by running away from the house or by traveling.

The Shaykh : The one who is able to perform Hajj but did not perform it, is it said of him: he is able not to perform Hajj?

The questioner: No.

The Shaykh : That is what you did.

The questioner : Then I made a mistake.

The Shaykh : Then let us correct it.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : Either he is able to disobey his parents, in which case it is obligatory for him to disobey them, based on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
A creature is not to be obeyed when it involves disobedience to the "Creator.” لا طاعةَ لمخلوق في معصية الخالق
Mishkat al-Masabih 3696
, or if he is not able because of his young age and his need for the shelter of his father and mother, in that case:
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : And I am not able, and perhaps you, the intermediary, are not able to say that he is able to disobey his parents or that he is not able.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : So the matter is as He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said:
Rather, man, against himself, will be a witness, بَلِ الْإِنْسَانُ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ بَصِيرَةٌ
[Al-Qiyamah 75:14]
You convey this brief answer to this student whom Allah guided to the true Salafi call, and you tell him: The Shaykh says: If you are able to disobey your parents and live on your own, then this is your obligation; otherwise,
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : And may Allah protect you, if Allah wills.

The questioner: Peace be upon you.

The Shaykh : Welcome, and upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
