The Shaykh’s discussion with some students regarding their concern for their material possessions that aid in religion, and whether this falls under selfishness.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The student : A moment ago, there was a power outage, and the recorders were out of order, but one recorderAbu Layla : was working. So I asked him, “Is your recorder working?” He said, “Yes.” I said to him, “I now excuse you from what was said about you, that you are selfish and do not like some people using the electrical outlets and your things and your belongings.” He said, “Yes.” I said to him, “I excuse you. I used to think it was selfishness in you, but it turned out to be concern. And Allah knows best.”

The Shaykh : Well, Abu Fars needs it now...
The student : The thing is for its owner, meaning he does not give it, he does not prefer his brothers over himself, and he keeps the thing for himself... Is that right, my Shaykh? Allah says:
and they prefer [others] over themselves وَيُؤْثِرُونَ عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ
.
Another student: No, it is not selfishness, it is preference (athrah).
The student : I mean, when I said I brought the verse, my brothers:
and they prefer [others] over themselves وَيُؤْثِرُونَ عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ
, meaning they leave the lesser or lower thing for themselves and give it to their brothers, so it becomes theirs, meaning!

The Shaykh : In material things or spiritual things?
The student : In material things.

The Shaykh : In material things?
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : In purely material things, or material things related to worship?
The student : I mean, now.

The Shaykh : It got a bit tight, it got a bit tight.
The student : It got a bit tight.

The Shaykh : And it hit!
The student : And it hit, that is correct, my Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Ah, and now is the research, I mean, for example.
The student : I mean, like the example I say: “Benefit your friend with something that does not harm you.”

The Shaykh : The matter is not like that, ha, the matter is what is upon you now.
The student : So let us benefit from you, my Shaykh!
Another student: Yes, that is right, from the beginning, may Allah bless you, and save us time, hehe.

The Shaykh : Now, since he is a specialist in recording, and he knows that whoever shares with him in taking electricity from the source from which he draws, if my expression is correct, it affects him, this is not selfishness, this is not selfishness in the sense that you are first explaining, and then you are secondly excusing him, this is an attempt to improve the sound on the tape which is intended for worship, not purely material.

The questioner : I mean, is this the precision that was in the previous question?

The Shaykh : Yes.
