Reflections on the Verse of Alms and the Difference in the Preposition

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : I hope that the grammarians will pay attention and look into the noble verse. The noble verse differs in its preposition. Does anyone know the difference in the noble verse? The preposition differs in the noble verse.

The questioner : When He, the Exalted, said:
and in the freeing of slaves وفي الرقاب
He affirmed that the alms are for the poor and the needy, those who work on them, and those whose hearts are to be reconciled. And after that, He said, "and for freeing captives."

The Shaykh : How does the preposition differ?

The questioner : With the preposition "in" (fi) for "freeing captives," but in the first part, He said, "Indeed, the alms are for the poor" (inna al-sadaqat li-l-fuqara').

The Shaykh : With the preposition "for" (li). Good, you have done well.
Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together إنما الصدقات للفقراء والمساكين والعاملين عليها والمؤلفة قلوبهم
[At-Tawbah 9:60]
These four categories came with what? With "for" (li).
and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler وفي الرقاب والغارمين وفي سبيل الله وابن السبيل
[At-Tawbah 9:60]
They came with "in" (fi). Does this result in a difference in the ruling, just as the preposition differs, or not? The answer is yes, it does result in a difference. The first four categories own the zakah with full ownership, while the remaining four categories are considered directions (channels) rather than individuals who own it. And if they own it, there is no objection.
