The Shaykh continues the lesson on "Al-Adab al-Mufrad," explaining the hadith of Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari, number (293)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : ... whoever Allah guides has no one to misguide, and whoever He leaves to misguide has no one to guide, and I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His messenger,
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].
[Ali 'Imran 3:102]
,
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.
[An-Nisa 4:1]
,
(70) O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. (71) He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
[Al-Ahzab 33:70-71]
, As for what follows:
Indeed, the best of speech is the speech of Allah, and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and the worst of matters are their innovations, every innovation is a religious innovation, every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire.
After a long interruption due to unforeseen circumstances, we return and resume the lesson on "Al-Adab al-Mufrad" by Imam al-Bukhari. I believe the last lesson ended at the hadith numbered two hundred and ninety-three; so we begin with it. It is one of the authentic hadiths that Imam al-Bukhari narrated in this book, "Al-Adab al-Mufrad," with an authentic chain from Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
Before your time a man was called to account and it was found that the only good thing he had done was that he was easy in his business dealings with people. He used to order his slaves to go easy with people who were in difficulty. Allah Almighty said, 'We are more entitled to do that than he is, so forgive him.'
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 14:35
.
This hadith explains the virtue of good character when a Muslim adopts it; indeed, it becomes a cause for freeing its owner from the punishment he deserves due to the sins and transgressions he committed. This is a man about whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said
There was among those before us—meaning from the Children of Israel—one who never did any good at all.
, except that he was a believer. We must always and forever assume in every hadith we read or every report we hear that contains such a great virtue, even if it does not mention that the one deserving this virtue was a Muslim, that the one deserving this virtue was a Muslim. We must assume in every hadith we hear that mentions a virtue that the one deserving this virtue was a Muslim. We hear in this hadith his saying (peace be upon him):
There was a man from those before you.
Sahih Ibn Hibban 43:35
; he did not say: he was a Muslim. So we must interpret this man as having been a Muslim, even if his description as a Muslim is not mentioned in the hadith. This is derived from the principles of the Shari'ah, because Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says regarding every one who associates partners with Allah:
And We will regard what they have done of deeds and make them as dust dispersed.
[Al-Furqan 25:23]
, and Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says, addressing the Ummah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) regarding the Prophet:
that if you should associate [anything] with Allah, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers." لَئِنْ أَشْرَكْتَ لَيَحْبَطَنَّ عَمَلُكَ وَلَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الخَاسِرِينَ
[Az-Zumar 39:65]
.
So when we hear a hadith like this:
A man from those before you was reckoned.
, and then we hear at the end of the hadith that Allah overlooked his sins, we must immediately keep in mind that this man was a Muslim. In a hadith like this, it is particularly necessary to make this assumption: that this man was a Muslim. Because it says: no good was found for him; yet the greatest good is faith. Therefore, in the hadiths of intercession, it is mentioned that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) commands, in the final stage, when the messengers, prophets, angels, and righteous people intercede, and then the Lord of the Worlds (Blessed and Exalted is He) intercedes; in some authentic narrations, He says
Take out.
, saying to the angels:
Take out of the Fire whoever has even an atom's weight of good in him
. The intended meaning of this good is faith. So when we read this hadith:
A man from among those before you was reckoned
, and the hadith concludes that Allah (Mighty and Majestic), after reckoning this person, overlooked him, we must assume and keep in mind that he was a Muslim. Otherwise, if he had been one who associates partners with Allah and had filled the earth with good and virtue, that would not benefit him at all, as in... in the previous verse:
And We will regard what they have done of deeds and make them as dust dispersed.
[Al-Furqan 25:23]
. This is confirmed by the authentic hadith that Imam Muslim included in his "Sahih" from the hadith of Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). The meaning of the hadith is that if a believer does a good deed, he is rewarded for it in this world and is also reckoned for it on the Day of Resurrection; meaning he has two good rewards: the first in this world, immediate, and the other in the Hereafter, delayed. As for the disbeliever, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: As for the disbeliever, whatever good deeds he does in this world, he is rewarded for them in this world; so when the Day of Resurrection comes, he comes with nothing in his record of good deeds. Allah (Mighty and Majestic), as He said:
And your Lord does injustice to no one.
[Al-Kahf 18:49]
. But every person is reckoned according to the faith he possessed. So the believer is rewarded for his good deeds in this world and the Hereafter with good, while the disbeliever is rewarded for his good deeds in this world; as for the Hereafter, he comes with no good deed in his record; that is because he disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger and associated partners with Allah (Mighty and Majestic); so his deeds were nullified, and he will be among the losers in the Hereafter.
I intended with this statement to draw your attention and to make you understand the religion when you read a hadith like this: there was a man from those before you, and then Allah overlooked his sins. You must keep in mind that he was a Muslim; otherwise, if he had been one who associates partners with Allah, his righteous deeds would not have benefited him at all.
After this, I say: He (peace be upon him) said: حُوسب رجلٌ ممَّن كان قبلكم فلم يُوجد له من الخير شيء A person from people who lived before you was called to account (by Allah at the Day of Judgment) and no good was found in his accountSahih Muslim 1561.
This hadith indicates that the reckoning on the Day of Reckoning means discussing with the person the good or evil he has presented, and presenting this balance and this result to the person so that he sees the outcome of it; either he will be among the people of Paradise or he will be among the people of the Fire. After this man was reckoned and nothing was found in his record of good except faith, as we mentioned...
