Continuation of the explanation of the previous hadith, number (293): (A man from those before you was reckoned.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : ...And otherwise, he was a man who mixed with people. What does it mean to mix with people? It means he did not isolate himself from them, but rather, as people say today, he was a social person; he was not isolated or withdrawn from people, but he mixed with them and dealt with them, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said in an authentic hadith explaining the matter of the believer who mixes with people but with good, and if he is harmed by them, he does not harm them, but rather he bears their harm. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The believer who mixes with people and endures their injury is better than the person who does not mix with people nor endure their injury. المؤمن الذي يُخالط الناس ويصبر على أذاهم خيرٌ من الذي لا يُخالطهم ولا يصبر على أذاهم
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 388
. So the believer who mixes with people and bears their harm is better than the one who does not mix with them and isolates himself, whether in his house, in a corner, or even in the mosque; he does not mix with people and does not bear their harm. This one, without doubt, has good in him because of his faith, but that one who mixes with people and bears their harm is better than this believer who does not mix with people and does not bear their harm. So this man who was before the Muhammadan community, and was reckoned, and nothing of good was found in his record except faith, had—says the Messenger (peace be upon him) in this hadith—only one trait; and that was that he used to mix with people and deal with them. And because of this dealing, he had acquired wealth until he became a wealthy, affluent man, and he had stores of money. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
had commanded his servants to show leniency to the straitened ones فكان يأمرُ غلمانه أن يتجاوزوا عن المُعسر
Sahih Muslim 1561
.
This man, because of this mixing and dealing with people, taking and giving, trading and profiting, became one of the great wealthy men, and became a merchant who had either hired servants or slave boys. Slavery was an old custom, even in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and this is a prescribed matter, but it has its known conditions in the books of hadith and the books of the Sunnah, and I am not now in the position of explaining any of these conditions, at least. The important thing is that this man became, because of the mixing, an affluent, wealthy man, and he had slave servants who would account for people. So he used to order his servants that when they accounted for one of his customers, they should not take them to task and not be harsh in demanding from him, but rather he ordered them to overlook and forgive; if you have with you, pay what is on your debt, and that is enough; whatever is on you, Allah will forgive you; I do not want anything from you.
So Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He), who is the most generous of the generous and the most merciful of the merciful, dealt with this human being in the same manner that he himself dealt with the children of Adam. He used to overlook and forgive and pardon the one who was unable to fulfill what was on him of debt or obligation; so this wealthy, affluent man would overlook and pardon him. So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said to His angels on the day He reckoned him (Mighty and Majestic), and did not find in his record any good as we mentioned, except this overlooking of his customers and those who owed him; so Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said to His angels:
We are more worthy of that than him نحن أحقُّ بذلك منه
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1307Sahih (Darussalam)
. If he overlooks My servants, and he is a servant among My servants, then I am more worthy of overlooking him. Overlook him. So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) forgave this affluent human being and overlooked all his evil deeds. Why? Because he overlooked his companions and his customers who were not able to clear their obligations before him. So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) rewarded this human being with the type of his work, even though the overlooking and forgiveness of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) has no parallel; because this human being who overlooks is only adopting a very small, very small part, and there is no comparison possible between this attribute and the attribute of the Lord of the Worlds in forgiveness. So he adopted something of the character of Allah (Mighty and Majestic); and that is overlooking the one who falls short, overlooking the one who errs. So when Allah (Mighty and Majestic) knew from this human being that he used to overlook the people who fell short with him, Allah (Mighty and Majestic) overlooked his falling short with Him. And this is as He (Mighty and Majestic) said in the Noble Qur'an:
Is the reward for good [anything] but good? هَلْ جَزَاءُ الإِحْسَانِ إِلَّا الإِحْسَانُ
[Ar-Rahman 55:60]
. Indeed, the Lord of the Worlds rewards with good more than what the human being deserves; because as He said:
the possessor of great bounty. ذُو الفَضْلِ العَظِيمِ
[Al-Baqarah 2:105]
.
