The Shaykh: The hadith that follows it is authentic, and from it comes this lesson. It states: 'Amr ibn 'Awf al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Abu 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah to Bahrain to bring back its jizyah. He arrived from Bahrain with its wealth. When the Ansar heard of Abu 'Ubaydah's arrival, they waited for the Fajr prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished praying in... they intercepted him and stood in his path. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled when he saw them, then said:
I think you have heard that Abu ‘Ubaidah has brought something from Bahrain? أظنكم سمعتم أن أبا عبيدة قدم بشيء من البحرين
Sunan Ibn Majah 3997Sahih (Darussalam)
They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He then said:
Rejoice and hope for what pleases you. By Allah, I do not fear poverty for you, but I fear that the worldly life will be spread out for you as it was spread out for those before you, so you will compete for it as they competed for it, and it will destroy you as it destroyed them.
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 16:1234
Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
