Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: Chapter: What is to be feared regarding the adornment of this world and the competition for it. Isma'il ibn 'Abdullah narrated to us, saying: Isma'il ibn Ibrahim ibn 'Uqbah narrated to me from Musa ibn 'Uqbah. Ibn Shihab said: 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr narrated to me that al-Miswar ibn Makhramah informed him that 'Amr ibn 'Awf, who was an ally of Banu 'Amir ibn Lu'ayy and had witnessed Badr with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), informed him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Abu 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah to Bahrain to bring its jizyah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had made a treaty with the people of Bahrain and appointed al-'Ala' ibn al-Hadrami as their governor. Abu 'Ubaydah arrived with wealth from Bahrain. The Ansar heard of his arrival and met

The Shaykh : and met, and met, and the third time, they met him at the Fajr prayer
The reader: In my copy, it says "they met"

The Shaykh : Fine, it does not contradict the other version
The reader: They met him at the Fajr prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When he finished the prayer, they approached him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled when he saw them and said:
I think you have heard of Abu 'Ubaydah's arrival and that he has brought something
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 16:1234
They said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah" He said:
Have the good news, and hope for what will please you. By Allah, I am not afraid that you will become poor, but I am afraid that worldly wealth will be given to you in abundance as it was given to those (nations) before you, and you will start competing each other for it as the previous nations competed for it, and then it will divert you (from good) as it diverted them.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6425
.

The Shaykh : This hadith contains a witness to the chapter heading, which is what is to be feared regarding the adornment of this world and the competition for it. This has become the concern of all people today, and people no longer care about anything except the adornment of this world, its luxury, comfort, and affluence, and the like. You hardly find anyone speaking about the religious activity that Muslims should have, but rather they boast and talk about the affluence in the lands and in themselves. This is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) feared, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I am not afraid that you will be poor
Sahih al-Bukhari 4015
Because poverty does not lead to arrogance, delusion, or turning away from Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Although poverty certainly distracts one sometimes in the pursuit of sustenance and livelihood, nevertheless, the pursuit of sustenance and livelihood, if done with a good intention, becomes worship.
but I am afraid that you will lead a life of luxury as past nations did
Sahih al-Bukhari 3158
Meaning it expands and increases, so you compete for it, or
So you will compete for it as they competed for it — meaning those before you — and it will distract you as it distracted them
And what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) feared has happened, and we are now competing for this world as the disbelievers competed for it, and striving for it as the disbelievers strive for it. Many of us now care only about our houses, our vehicles, our clothes, our gardens, and the like.
