It is reported in al-Bukhari from some of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite "Bismillah" and prolong "al-Rahman al-Rahim"

The questioner : I am in "Sahih al-Bukhari" from the hadith of one of the wives of the Prophet (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) regarding reciting "Bismillah" aloud. She said, meaning he would say:
In the name of Allah بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
, and he would prolong
the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
, which necessitates reciting it aloud to completion. And he used to prolong it. So her statement that "he used to prolong it" is not possible. The Sunnah does not include reciting it aloud. I find the hadiths about reciting it aloud confusing, and you were kind enough to say that there is no authentic hadith on this.

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner : Do I want clarification on this?

The Shaykh : The matter is clear, and praise be to Allah, but you have overlooked the fact that this hadith you are asking about has no mention of prayer. And we investigated reciting the Basmala aloud in prayer; is that not so?

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : So is there any mention of prayer in your hadith?

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : That is it, the issue is resolved. Was not the Messenger (peace be upon him) teaching his Companions? He taught them in prayer and he taught them outside of prayer. As for in prayer, he taught them by way of direct recitation. As for outside of prayer, he would recite and listen to them and correct their mistakes for them. Is it not permissible for the Messenger (peace be upon him) to recite for them as I am doing now—without likening, as it is said—I say: "Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim," so that someone might report from me the same report that was reported from the Messenger (peace be upon him). But I am not in prayer now; therefore, there is no issue with the hadith you attributed to al-Bukhari. Your attribution to him is correct, and your report from him is correct. But your error and your assumption led you to think it was in prayer, whereas it was not in prayer.

The questioner : May Allah reward you.
