A word by Shaykh Ibrahim Shuqqa regarding the warning against exaggeration in the status of the shaykhs.

The questioner: Praise is to Allah; we praise Him, seek His help, and seek His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our own souls and from the badness of our deeds. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomsoever He misguides, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger. As for what follows, the truest of speech is the Book of Allah, and there is no guidance other than the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The worst of matters are their innovations, and every innovation is a religious innovation, and every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire.
- Or having a good opinion of oneself, and this is a clear matter with no doubt in it. As for when it is directed to someone of higher rank by someone of lower rank, this is a matter in which there is no doubt that it does not contain the blame, or the forbidden speech, or the warning that is present in the first type of speech. As for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), it is said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "Pray for us, intercede for us." This occurred frequently among the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them); they used to seek intercession through the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). This is because, first, they did not have these suspicions about him. This is one point. Another matter is that he is the Prophet, meaning the one to whom the revelation is conveyed from his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, and he conveys it. Then the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is trustworthy in this regard. Without a doubt, we cannot imagine that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would do what other humans do, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is protected from these matters that are thought to revolve around humans, and they engage in them themselves out of arrogance, love, boasting, and the like. So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is free from this, without a doubt, and is protected from it. Therefore, beware of this speech that is directed to someone of high rank; it is not directed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at all. As for the shaykhs, and especially the shaykhs of the Sufis or the shaykhs of the paths, and such speech may be said to them, without a doubt this increases their arrogance, elevation, and boasting. At that point, or rather, I do not say they alone are like that, but every human being who is in a position...The Shaykh : ...or in the position of the president, or the leader, or the one in authority, or so on and so forth. At that point, a person must be extremely cautious of such speech directed to them with these phrases.
As for the speech that concerns the majesty of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, such as "May Allah make you happy" or "May Allah honor you," are such words permissible? We leave the completion of this question to our Shaykh.
