The questioner : From 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb (may Allah be pleased with him), from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
when anyone was alarmed while asleep he should say, “I seek refuge in God's perfect words from His anger, His punishment, the evil of His servants, the evil suggestions of the devils and their presence,” for they will not injure him. 'Abdallah b. ‘Amr used to teach them to those of his children who had reached puberty and those who had not. He wrote them down on some material (1) and hung the writing on the child’s neck.
Mishkat al-Masabih 2477
This hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud, and I indicated its improvement in a marginal note...

The Shaykh : What I indicated as improved is the supplication, this supplication for the startle, not the action of Ibn 'Umar and his hanging of it.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : This, Ibn 'Umar, this is not authentic in its chain; there is a break in it due to the *'an'anah* of Muhammad ibn Ishaq.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Yes, because this hadith itself, meaning the supplication by which the Messenger (peace be upon him) supplicated or taught us to supplicate against the startle, is *hasan li ghayrihi* (good due to other supporting evidence) because it has a corroborating narration from another route. If we had relied only on the chain of Abu Dawud, even the supplication would have remained weak. But we found a corroborating narration for the supplication, so we strengthened it with that. We did not find a corroborating narration for Ibn 'Umar's instruction to hang it, so we left it weak in its original chain.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : And in *Al-Kalim al-Tayyib*, the issue is also clarified. Do you have *Al-Kalim al-Tayyib*? Yes, it contains a detailed explanation of this.
