The questioner : From 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb (may Allah be pleased with him), from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
when anyone was alarmed while asleep he should say, “I seek refuge in God's perfect words from His anger, His punishment, the evil of His servants, the evil suggestions of the devils and their presence,” for they will not injure him. إذا فَزَعَ أحدكم في النوم فليقُلْ : أعوذ بكلمات الله التامات من غضبه وعقابه وشرِّ عباده ومن همزات الشياطين وأن يحضرون ؛ فإنها لن تضرَّه
Mishkat al-Masabih 2477
. He said: And 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr used to teach it to those of his children who had reason, and for those who did not have reason, he would write it on a paper and hang it around their necks . The hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud, and you indicated its improvement in "Al-Ta'liq al-Raghib 'ala al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib."

The Shaykh : What I indicated as improved is the supplication; this supplication for the startle, not the action of Ibn 'Umar and hanging it.

The questioner: 'Amr.

The Shaykh : This, from Ibn 'Amr, this is not authentic. There is a break in its chain, and it contains the 'an'anah of Muhammad ibn Ishaq.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh: Yes.
Because this hadith itself, meaning the supplication with which the Messenger (peace be upon him) supplicated or taught us to supplicate for the startle, is hasan li ghayrihi; because it has a corroborating narration from another route.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Yes, and if we relied only on the chain of Abu Dawud, even the supplication would remain weak. But we found a corroborating narration for the supplication, so we strengthened it with that. And we did not find a corroborating narration for Ibn 'Umar's advice to hang it, so we left it weak in its original chain.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : And beware of that.

Eid Abbasi : ... the commentary on "Al-Kalim al-Tayyib."

The Shaykh : In "Al-Kalim al-Tayyib," the issue is also clarified. Do you have "Al-Kalim al-Tayyib"?

The questioner : I have it, yes.

The Shaykh : Yes, it contains this detailed explanation.
