The Shaykh : The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said: And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said
A man used to do sinful deeds, and when death came to him, he said to his sons, 'After my death, burn me and then crush me, and scatter the powder in the air, for by Allah, if Allah has control over me, He will give me such a punishment as He has never given to anyone else.'
Sahih al-Bukhari 3481
When he died, they did that to him,
Allah ordered the earth saying, 'Collect what you hold of his particles.' It did so, and behold! There he was (the man) standing. Allah asked (him), 'What made you do what you did?' He replied, 'O my Lord! I was afraid of You.' So Allah forgave him. " Another narrator said "The man said, Fear of You, O Lord!" فأمر الله الأرض فقال اجمعي ما فيك ففعلت فإذا هو قائم فقال ما حملك على ما صنعت؟ قال خشيتك يا ربي أو قال مخافتك فغُفِرَ له
Sahih al-Bukhari 3481
In another narration, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said
A man who had never done a good deed said to his family: "When I die, burn me, then scatter half of me on land and half in the sea. By Allah, if Allah were able to overpower me, He would punish me with a punishment He does not inflict on anyone in the worlds." When the man died, they did what he ordered. So Allah commanded the land to gather what was in it, and He commanded the sea to gather what was in it. Then He said: "Why did you do this?" He said: "Out of fear of You, O my Lord, and You know best." So Allah the Exalted forgave him.
It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim, and Malik and al-Nasa'i narrated it similarly.
Among the strange matters are the strange events and wills that occurred in the time before the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). There occurred in that time strange and wondrous things, either because such things no longer occur after the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) for a wisdom intended by Allah, or because some of them do occur but their news does not reach us, because we have no one there to investigate these reports except the Creator of their owners and those connected to them. Then He reveals them to our infallible Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he conveys them to his Ummah as a warning and a reminder.
For this reason, al-Bukhari and Muslim included in their Sahihs, from the report of 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Convey from me, even if it be an Ayah, and narrate from the Children of Isra'il, and there is no harm, And whoever lies upon me purposely, then let him take his seat in the Fire.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2669Sahih (Darussalam)
The evidence is the middle part of this hadith, namely his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
relate traditions from the children of Isra'il; there is no harm.
Sunan Abi Dawud 3662Sahih (Al-Albani)
And among the best things that one of us is told today about the Children of Israel is what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told us, for which the chains of narration are authentic regarding him (peace and blessings be upon him).
As you heard, it contains a wonder from those wonders. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
There was a man who was extravagant with himself. When death approached him,
In the other narration:
he had never done any good.
In this first narration, he continued in his extravagance with himself, meaning his oppression of it, until death approached him. That is, he was not among those who spend a portion of their lives in extravagance, open sinfulness, and lewdness, and then just before their death they turn to Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) and repent to Him. This man was not like that; rather, he continued in his extravagance, his oppression of himself, and his disobedience to his Lord until death approached him. But he was not among those deluded people who do evil deeds and then hope for the forgiveness of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). Unfortunately, many Muslims today rely on the forgiveness of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and do not engage in the righteous deeds by which they would deserve the forgiveness of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He).
So this man was acknowledging his shortcoming and his sin against himself. Yet it appears from this strange story that his faith was still alive in his heart, and there was still in him something that qualified him to receive the forgiveness of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He), even though he took a path that perhaps no one before him or after him had taken. That is, he made this unjust will, where he said (peace and blessings be upon him):
When death approached him,
This man
he said to his sons, 'After my death, burn me
Sahih al-Bukhari 3481
and he was not satisfied with that, then he said:
Grind me.
He imagined that the burning might not consume all his bones, so that something of these bones would remain standing. To confirm what he imagined as a means of escape from the punishment of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), he said to them:
Grind me.
meaning, considering what he was, he was a sound person who died, so he ordered them to burn him with fire. Then he confirmed that for them by grinding him and taking the result of that burning and grinding, which is that he would become dust. He said:
then scatter me in the wind
Sunan Ibn Majah 4255Sahih (Darussalam)
In the other narration, there is clarification, as you heard, and it will also come that he ordered them to scatter or scatter—two narrations—half of the ashes in the wind and half in the sea. This is also an exaggeration in his misguided belief that he would be lost from Allah (Mighty and Majestic). He said:
then scatter me in the wind
Sunan Ibn Majah 4255Sahih (Darussalam)
Why did he make this strange, unjust will? He swore and clarified, saying:
for by Allah , if Allah gets hold of me, he will punish me in a way that He will not punish anyone else
Sunan an-Nasa'i 2079Sahih (Darussalam)
meaning, from among those who are extravagant with themselves. When he died, it was done to him. Here a type of obedience from the children to their fathers appears, extreme obedience. But it appears that they did not have, either in their law, that such a will is an unjust will that is not permissible to be made, and if he made such an unjust will, it is not permissible for the one to whom it is made to execute it, because it contradicts the Shari'ah of Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
The execution of this will by these sons is understood in one of two ways. The first is that perhaps it was not in their law that this is not permissible. The second is that if it was in their law, these people were not aware of it, and therefore they hastened to execute their father's will.
He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, completing the hadith:
Allah ordered the earth saying, 'Collect what you hold
Sahih al-Bukhari 3481
After the particles of this man, who was burned with fire and scattered in the wind and in the sea, had dispersed, He said to both the sea and the dry land: "Gather the particles of so-and-so." And He said to it: "Be so-and-so." And he was a sound human being. So He (Blessed and Exalted is He) addressed this man after restoring him to what he was: "What made you do what you did?" He said: "Your fear, O my Lord," or he said: "Your awe." So He forgave him.
In another narration, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
A man who had never done a single good deed in his family said, "When I die, burn me. قال رجل لم يعمل حسنة قط في أهله إذا متّ فحرقوه
The address shifted to the backbiting, the backbiting. He said:
to burn his dead body when he would die and to scatter half of its ashes over the land and half in the ocean. By Allah, if Allah finds him in His grip, He would torment him with a torment with which He did not afflict anyone amongst the people of the world; and when the person died, it was done to him as he had commanded (his family) to do. Allah commanded the land to collect (the ashes scattered on it) and He commanded the ocean and that collected (ashes) contained in it. Allah questioned him why he had done. that He said: My Lord, it is out of Thine fear that I have done it and Thou art well aware of it, and Allah granted him pardon:.
Sahih Muslim 2756a
