The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned the evidence that clarifies that one does not declare every person who commits an act of disbelief to be a disbeliever

The Shaykh : That hadith is what al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated from the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and others of the Companions of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). He said:
There was among those before you a man who never did any good. When death approached him, he gathered his sons and said to them: "What kind of father was I to you?" They said: "The best of fathers." He said: "I am a sinner with my Lord, and if Allah has power over me, He will surely punish me with a severe punishment. So when I die, burn me with fire, then scatter half of my ashes in the wind and half in the sea." When the man died, they burned him with fire, and they took the ashes and threw half of them in the raging wind and the other half in the surging sea.
, Why did this man do this and make this will?! One cannot imagine anything like it in terms of injustice and deviation! To mislead himself regarding his Lord, because he felt deep in his heart that he was a sinner with Allah. And so he said, among other things:
And if Allah has power over me, He will surely punish me with a severe punishment.
, and he made that will, and the will was carried out. Then Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said to his ashes:
Be so-and-so, and he became a sound human being. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said: "O My servant, what drove you to do what you did?" He said: "My Lord, I feared You." He said: "I have forgiven you."
. We know from the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He):
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills
[An-Nisa 4:48]
. How did Allah forgive this? Is there an exception in the verse?! I say: Yes, and yes. This man was not a mushrik (one who associates partners with Allah). I must pause here, because I know that most people do not notice that shirk (associating partners with Allah) and kufr (disbelief) are one and the same in the Shari'ah. They differ linguistically, but in the Shari'ah they mean the same thing. Every mushrik is a kafir (disbeliever), and every kafir is a mushrik; there is no difference.
