The hadith on wiping over the socks: Is it authentic?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner: ... wiping over the socks ... .

The Shaykh : Wiping over the socks.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh: Yes, indeed. The hadith on wiping over the socks is among the authentic hadiths that have been transmitted through numerous routes. Although some of its individual chains contain weakness, the route of al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah, which was narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, has a sound chain. Even though Abu Dawud criticized it due to its anomaly (shudhdh), and other imams such as 'Abd al-Rahman al-Mahdi did the same, al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Hibban, and others disagreed with them and deemed it authentic. When we saw that they differed, we returned to scientific research and found that those who weakened it argued that the one who added the detail of wiping over the socks in the hadith did so based on the text of the hadith: "I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over the socks and the sandals..." It is well known from the narrations of the trustworthy and most accurate narrators from al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah that he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over the leather socks (khuffayn). So the other trustworthy narrator, who is perhaps Abu ..., has no connection to this hadith.
The important point is that the trustworthy narrator who narrated this hadith from al-Mughirah was accused by those who weakened it of having made a mistake, because he narrated what contradicted the trustworthy narrators... that it is an anomalous hadith. This research clarifies that it is not correct to classify it among anomalous hadiths. Because an anomalous hadith, as Imam al-Shafi'i said, is not when a trustworthy narrator narrates what the trustworthy narrators did not narrate, but rather when he narrates what contradicts the trustworthy narrators. So the trustworthy narrator who narrated from al-Mughirah that he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over the socks and the sandals did not contradict the trustworthy narrators who narrated from al-Mughirah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over the leather socks. Rather, he brought a completely new matter. Therefore, he narrated what the trustworthy narrators did not narrate, but he did not contradict the trustworthy narrators. So the truth in that case is that we add the narration of this trustworthy narrator to the narrations of those trustworthy narrators. The result is that al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at one time wiping over the leather socks, at another time wiping over the socks, and at another time wiping over the sandals.
And one of the strange things I noticed in discussing this hadith is that those who criticized this hadith of al-Tirmidhi regarding wiping over the socks and sandals, claiming it contradicts the narrations of the trustworthy narrators... from the narration of Muslim from al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah that he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over the leather socks and the turban; should this be rejected on the claim that he added to the trustworthy narrators and thus contradicted them? No. So just as the narration of Muslim is accepted as authentic—and it contains the addition of wiping over the turban—likewise, the narration of al-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, and others from al-Mughirah regarding wiping over the socks and the sandals should be accepted.
And finally: The result and summary for us is that al-Mughirah narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding wiping over four things: over the leather socks, over the turban, over the socks, and over the sandals.
The scholar of the Levant, "Jama' al-Din al-Qasimi," has a beneficial treatise on wiping over the leather socks that was printed, excuse me, on wiping over the socks that was printed, and its printing was renewed in Lebanon. I supervised the annotation of it, the tracing of its hadiths to their sources, and the addition of other corroborating narrations related to the topic of wiping over the leather socks, socks, and sandals. And the result and summary of what we mentioned there is... that wiping does not have any of the conditions mentioned in the books of jurisprudence, despite the differences in schools of jurisprudence and conditions. No condition is required for wiping over the leather socks or the socks other than that they be worn in a state of ritual purity, and other than that the resident wipes for one day and one night, and the traveler for three days and their nights.
This is the answer to the question.
Other than that?
