The questioner : May Allah reward the honorableThe Shaykh : Is fasting three days of every month in the month of Shawwal required, or does fasting the six days of Shawwal suffice for it? And is there a report from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he combined the six days of Shawwal with the three days of every month? I ask for your guidance, as there has been much talk about this.

The Shaykh : Yes, fasting three days of every month has virtue, and it is permissible. The virtue lies in fasting on the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth days, while it is permissible to fast on the rest of the month. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to fast three days of every month, not caring whether he fasted them at the beginning of the month, the middle, or the end. كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يصوم ثلاثة أيام من كل شهر لا يبالي أصامها من أول الشهر أو وسطه أو آخره
Based on this, if a person fasts six days of Shawwal, it suffices for the three days. But if he says, "I want to fast the white days," we say, "Fast the white days," which are the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth days. As for fasting three days of every month, it has been achieved by fasting the six days, because fasting the six days is three days and more. Yes?

The questioner : He asks whether there is a report from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding combining them?

The Shaykh : As for his question whether there is a report from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) regarding combining the fasting of the six days of Shawwal with the fasting of the white days? You have known, or everyone has now known, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
He used to fast three days of every month, not caring whether he fasted them at the beginning of the month, the middle, or the end. كان يصوم ثلاثة أيام من كل شهر لا يبالي أصامها من أول الشهر أو وسطه أو آخره
And we do not know that the Messenger (may Allah's prayer and peace be upon him) used to fast the six days of Shawwal, but he encouraged his Ummah to do so, saying:
Whoever fasts Ramadan then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted for a lifetime. من صام رمضان ثم أتبعه بست من شوال كان كمن صام الدهر
Sunan Ibn Majah 1716Sahih (Darussalam)
