The difference between the wording issued by the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and the wording understood by the Companion from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The student of knowledge should note that there is a difference between the wording issued by the Messenger and the wording issued by the Companion; because the latter expresses the meaning he understood from the Messenger. There is no doubt that the wording transmitted by the Companion from the Messenger contains two benefits: the benefit of the wording and the benefit of the meaning. Thus, we cannot say that the Messenger did not utter this specific wording, but rather that he only uttered the meaning. This is unlike the second category, where we say this is the meaning, but we do not know the Messenger's exact wording. When a Companion says:
The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited putting on shoes while standing نهى رسول صلى الله عليه وسلم عن الانتعال قائمًا
for example, we do not know what the Messenger's exact wording was. If he said: The Messenger of Allah said:
Do not put on your shoes while standing لا تنتعلوا قيامًا
we say that both its wording and its meaning are clear. But when he says:
The Messenger of Allah prohibited نهى رسول الله
the Messenger's exact wording was not transmitted to us, but the meaning was transmitted to us.
In this case: Is this meaning used as evidence? The answer is: Yes. However, distinguishing between the Messenger's wording and the Companion's wording helps us sometimes when two reports come to us containing some contradiction. In that case, adhering to the Messenger's wording along with the meaning is stronger than adhering to the Companion's wording along with the meaning contained in it.
