The questioner : Is the dhikr when carrying the funeral a religious innovation? Is reciting Surat Yasin in congregation at the burial a religious innovation? And I also ask: when the burial is finished, the imam makes du'a and the attendees say "Ameen" in congregation? We begin with the issue of dhikr, O honorable Shaykh, when carrying the funeral.

The Shaykh : Yes. The dhikr when carrying the funeral is a religious innovation, and so is commanding it. We have heard that some people, when they hold the bedposts, say "La ilaha illa Allah" and raise their voices. We have also heard that some people say, "Unify, unify," commanding people to do dhikr. All of this is among the religious innovations. So if one hears someone saying this, let him advise him and say, "This was not transmitted from the pious predecessors." What is the second issue?

The questioner : The second issue is reciting Surat Yasin in congregation at the burial.

The Shaykh : This is also among the religious innovations. Reciting Yasin at the burial is a religious innovation, and doing it in congregation is also a religious innovation; so it is an innovation upon an innovation. It was reported in the hadith:
Recite Yasin (Surah no. 36), over those who are dying. اقرؤوا على موتاكم يس
Bulugh al-Maram 537
Some scholars of knowledge weakened this hadith and said: "It is not authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family)." And those who authenticated it said: The meaning is to recite it for the one who is dying, whose time has come. The dying of a person is known to those who observe him by clear signs, so they recite Surat Yasin. It has been said that reciting Surat Yasin for the dying person facilitates the exit of the soul, so Allah knows best.
As for reciting it at the grave in congregation, this is a religious innovation without doubt. What is the third issue?

The questioner : The third issue: when the burial is finished, the imam makes du'a and the attendees around him say "Ameen."

The Shaykh : This is also among the religious innovations: that the imam or anyone else with him makes du'a for the deceased and the attendees say "Ameen," because that was not transmitted from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). Rather, the opposite was transmitted. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), when he finished burying the deceased, would stand over him and say:
Seek forgiveness for your brother, and beg steadfastness for him, for he will be questioned now. استغفروا لأخيكم واسألوا له التثبيت فإنه الأن يُسأل
Sunan Abi Dawud 3221Sahih (Al-Albani)
He did not make du'a with them, [but rather] seeking forgiveness for the deceased and asking for steadfastness.
And on this occasion, I would like to remind my Muslim brothers, everyone who hears this speech of mine, to proceed in these matters according to what the Sunnah brought and the practice of the pious predecessors, and not to innovate anything therein that Allah and His Messenger have not legislated, so that they become among the innovators. Every religious innovation is misguidance. When the deceased is buried and the burial is finished, the person stands at the grave and says: "O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, forgive him," because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), when he made du'a, would do so three times. "O Allah, make him steadfast, O Allah, make him steadfast, O Allah, make him steadfast," then he turns away. This is what the Sunnah indicates. As for standing for a long time and reciting verses, the Verse of the Throne, or al-Fatihah, or Yasin, or other surahs, there is no basis for it.

The questioner : We conclude this meeting, O honorable Shaykh, with this question from the questioner Umm Hamzah from Khamis Mushait, who mentions that she...
