I heard from some people that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) used to place a covering on his head so that it would not get dirty with the sand of the desert and the dust, and so did the Companions.

The questioner : The questioner says: I heard from some people that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) used to place a covering on his head so that it would not get dirty with the sand of the desert and the dust, and so did the Companions, and that this is not from the Sunnah. Is this correct?

The Shaykh : ... the last part contradicts the first. He heard such a thing and that it is not from the Sunnah. Repeat it for me.

The questioner : He heard that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Companions used to place a covering on his head in order not to get dirty with the sand of the desert and the dust.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : And that this is not from the Sunnah.

The Shaykh : He heard this and that? In any case, the question is incorrect.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : In any case, there is an error in the question, perhaps psychological or linguistic, or Allah knows best. The important thing is that it is not in the Sunnah that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to place a khimar on his head for the reason mentioned, a covering for the reason mentioned. But in the Sunnah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had an 'imamah, and this 'imamah is a khimar that covers the head, and it can be manipulated in many forms. That is the turban that we call it today, or in some countries the "biddad." This is the 'imamah, and in reality, it can be wrapped around the head when working, when plowing, in the heat, ..., in the sunstroke. One can wrap oneself in it to ward off the harm of cold and the like.
This was in use until its mention came in some authentic hadiths, where he (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded wiping over the leather socks and the khimar. The command means that a dispensation was granted for wiping over the leather socks and the khimar. The leather socks are the garment for the feet, and the khimar is the garment for the head. The Wise Lawgiver granted a dispensation for wiping over the khimar without having to do this, wiping your entire head... no, you do not wipe over it. If one wears this covering that the questioner mentioned, which is the khimar or the 'imamah, this is established in the Sunnah and in many hadiths. But the reason mentioned, that it is to ward off the dust of the desert or the sand of the desert and the like, some people may say it as a philosophy or a reason for this garment, as we philosophize and say it is to ward off the heat or the cold, for example. But that it was mentioned in the Sunnah, we do not know of any basis for that in it at all.
