The Shaykh : We take two points from these lines in this writer’s critique of some of the preachers who belong to the Salafiyyah. I said that one of them is more important than the other. The first is that everyone should know that the Salafi call is not based on diminishing the rights of scholars. How could it be, when the Noble Qur’an says:
and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness وَلَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شَنَآنُ قَوْمٍ عَلَى أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا اعْدِلُوا هُوَ أَقْرَبُ لِلتَّقْوَى
[Al-Ma'idah 5:8]
? If the Noble Qur’an commands all Muslims to be just in issuing their judgments, even regarding those they hate, then how much more so should they be with those they love? Therefore, we know, and we have mentioned this for about twenty years, our respect for our imams and our emulation and following of them. However—and this is the crux of the matter, as they say—we differ from the masses of Muslims who do not belong to the Salafi call. We differ from them in our following, and in our exalting and honoring of our imams, in a fundamental way. Perhaps this difference is the cause and trigger for the resentment of some who have not properly understood the Salafi call, whether from among those who belong to it or those who do not belong to it but adopt some of its ideas and opinions. When we honor the imams and exalt them, it is because we know that they are guides and callers to what we call to, namely the Book and the Sunnah, and because we consider them intermediaries between us and our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) ...
