However, there are hadiths that indicate to people that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) also wiped over socks. A large majority of Muslim scholars have stated that wiping over socks is permissible, even if they are thin. Among them was 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, as Imam al-Nawawi mentioned in his great book, al-Majmu' Sharh al-Muhadhdhab.
