The ruling on wiping over the leather socks, and what are the leather socks?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Shaykh, is it permissible to wipe over the leather socks? And what are the leather socks?

The Shaykh : Wiping over the leather socks is established by mass transmission among the people of the Sunnah, in disagreement with others. There are many, and very many, hadiths regarding this. However, there are hadiths that expand the ruling for people, stating that the Messenger (peace be upon him) also wiped over socks. A large majority of Muslim scholars have stated that wiping over socks is permissible, even if they are thin. Among them was 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, as mentioned by Imam al-Nawawi in his great book, al-Majmu' Sharh al-Muhadhdhab.
