Conditions for Wiping over Leather Socks
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: A question from: M. S. — He says: Is a specific type of leather sock required for wiping over them, or is any other type of sock acceptable?
A: It is prescribed to wipe over leather socks if they cover the feet and the ankles, are pure, and are made from the skin of any pure animal, such as camels, cattle, sheep, or the like, provided they are put on while in a state of ritual purity.
It is also permissible to wipe over socks, which are what are woven to cover the feet from cotton, wool, or other materials. This is in accordance with the stronger of the two opinions of the scholars, because it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he wiped over socks and sandals, and this is also established from a group of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (may Allah be pleased with them). This is because they are equivalent to leather socks in providing ease, and this applies during the duration of wiping, which is one day and one night for a resident, and three days and their nights for a traveler. This period begins from the wiping after a state of minor ritual impurity, according to the stronger of the two opinions of the scholars, based on the authentic hadiths reported on this matter, provided they are put on after completing ritual purity, and this refers to minor ritual purity.
As for major ritual impurity, one does not wipe over them; rather, it is obligatory to remove them and wash the feet. This is based on what is established from Safwan ibn 'Asal (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 96Hasan (Darussalam) It was narrated by al-Nasa'i, and al-Tirmidhi with his wording, and Ibn Khuzaymah, and they graded it as authentic, as stated by al-Hafiz in al-Bulugh.
Major ritual purity is purity from major ritual impurity, menstruation, and post-natal bleeding. As for minor ritual purity, it is purity from minor states of ritual impurity, such as urination, passing wind, and other things that break the ablution.
And success is from Allah.

When we were traveling, Allah's Messenger would order us not to remove our Khuff for three days and nights, except for Janabah, but not for defecating, urinating, and sleep.
